I have a 2012 Evo X with Injen UICP and Short Ram Intake. The car has just hit 9300 miles. Last week I noticed that while I am driving, all the gears around 3000-4000rpm it seems that they drop for a sec or two then pick back up. It does not seem to be losing any HP. When the parts were installed I noticed an improvement as I figured but now I am unsure. Someone said that it may be possible that there may be an issue with the fuel filter not giving enough fuel but I was leaning away from that possibility. The car is going in the shop tomorrow to be looked at covered under warranty. Is there any possibility that it may be clutch?? It seems to drive just fine when in a lower RPM but when I get to that 3-4 range is when I notice it. I don’t notice any slipping of the clutch in first and still catches like it did when I bought it brand new. Any help or suggestions about this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

your idle seems to be ok? not jumping around on you...just hanging at about 750?
Idle seems to be fine all the time. Ever since i got the car i know when the car is parked and running, the idle will jump up for a sec then back down but thats been that way since i got the car. I figured that was normal. I was just out it in and noticed now that in any gear if im over the 3000rpm, it seems to be doing it constantly from 3000+ so im not sure if that is leaning towards the clutch slipping??? if thats the case what are my options for clutches out there to purchase that wont "break the bank". I have talked with a few other people and they stated the stock clutches that are in the Evo X are crap and get replaced pretty quick. Is that True??

What do you mean by "they"? the rpms drop? Even when my car was completely stock it used to hesitate/sputter at higher rpms when at full throttle. It finally went away after I got the car tuned. Originally Posted by 2012evogsr

You should check you FPR hose and replace the fuel pump relay. Although I did these things and it didn't help, it's still a good idea

If your clutch was slipping your RPMs wouldn't drop, they would jump or raise slightly before falling once the clutch finally grabbed again. It sounds like you've developed a boost leak/vac leak somewhere...

thanks for the input guys. the car is going in tomorrow to get looked at I will keep you posted on what they say hopefully it is just a boost leak because the clutch seems to be fine but just felt weird because the RPM's we're dropping 3000 +. if I got on it is when the RPM's would drop down for a second or 2 then kick back up under full power I noticed it as well at 6000 7000 rpm.
Hey guys, just giving you all an update. I did take it in to the shop and they did confirm that the issue is the clutch. The tech that looked at it is certified through Mitsubishi Motors and confirmed that the clutch is slipping due to me increasing the HP and TQ from changing intercooler pipes and now that it is pulling harder, the stock clutch’s in the Evo X are not that great and can’t take it. Im sure a lot of people have heard of Extreme PSI in Bensalem Pa. That is about 10 min down the road from me and they sell hundreds of parts for the Evo’s. They are recommending the Competition Clutch Stage 3 Street/Strip 2600 Series with the Competition Clutch Ultra Lightweight Steel Flywheel. I have copied the URL on both the Clutch Kit and the Flywheel. Take a look and let me know what you think. Thanks.

I would get a second opinion.
What are you driving habits? There are plenty of people who have full bolt on cars with the stock clutch and they rack up tens of thousands of miles.

I noticed since last thursday when this started, it has been getting worse. when driving now does not matter what gear im in, it seems to be slipping at 3000 rpms. I feel like i shouldnt be driving the car cause of how slow i have to go in the beginning cause of the slipping.
I have been doing some other snooping around the forums and found this post in the evoxforums.com. this guy has the same identical problem as me. his symptoms are identical and also at a low car mileage.

Your problem doesn't sound like clutch slipping if your RPMS are dropping and then returning to normal. When a clutch slips your RPMS raise and then hits back where you should be at.
Why not try taking a video of it with a phone or something?

are your rpms dropping to zero then back up? then it sounds like the CAN bus is dropping, look into that also

Not clutch, boost leak. Ur car is hesitating coz the maf says theres this much air going in, so the ecu tells the injectors to put this much fuel. Ur car is running too rich that's why it falls on the rpm then goes back up to normal.
If ur rpm goes up then falls back to normal, then it's ur clutch.
Get a second opinion. Maybe even third. Uicp does not add horsepower. It just makes ur boost consistent coz it doesn't expand. What the shop told u is "believable" to people, but they r just telling u to buy that clutch to make profit.
Actually, I reread ur post, u said u got intake as well? There's ur culprit. Did u get the car tuned or just installed the intake and called it a day? Ur MAF scaling is wrong. That's why ur car hesitates. Get it tuned and it won't do this anymore.

@Panda
I installed the UICP and Intake at same time and did NOT have car tuned. It actually has been running better than stock for past few months since it was installed. While driving the car, the RPM's jump up and then go back down to normal RPM's while driving. I noticed it a week ago but was very little and now it is worse. I havent done it much but when driving and noticing this, i would get on the gas in gear for a second and the RPM's would increase but car would barely move. I did not think that would have anything to do with a boost/vac leak. My buddy is actually the salesman who sold me the car last year and actually helped me out with getting new clutch/ ultra lightweight flywheel. I was able to get it at $150 cheaper than me buying it straight up. Only thing that is killing me is how much the dealership wants to charge to install the clutch. they are charging me 10 hrs labor at $100 per hour $1000 total + tax. i need my car since its my daily driver esp for work. someone i know that has an Evo 8 said he could do my clutch for $750 but would take him like 4-5 days to do everything since its being done at his house in afternoon/night time. The dealership is to do the clutch monday morning and get it back to me monday closing time or lunch time tuesday. Anyone no anyone in the PA/Phila area that can help me out.
