It won't help, dialling down your boost will only affect how much fuel you are using at WOT. Here are your options to get better MPG.

1. Get a tune (I don't know how bad the Xs gas mileage is but it probably still won't be great)
2. Ease off the gas pedal (similar situation to option 1)
3. Trade in.

What kind of tunes are there? And i have the slap shift (lame, i know) and always shift it before it boosts. Idk if me shifting too early is hurting me or helping.

A single tune should return more power AND better fuel economy. They shouldn't affect one another (ie you can not sacrifice a few hp for better fuel economy), the reason being when you drive differently you use different parts of the map.

Shifting too early can hurt your MPGs but it is hard to say without seeing how you drive.

What is the actual MPG you are getting?
Do you have any mods?
Is you check engine light on?

Weight reduction and proper air pressure in your tires will also help you find more MPG.

I dont have anything done to it, yet. No check engine light, and mpgs are around 14-20 but i also live on an air force base and we can only putter around and the city is too congested to open up. So i take it pretty easy on the pedal. Would a cold air and exhaust help any to open up air flow and help it get better mpgs?

X's are notorious gas hogs---( should have looked into that before the purchase, as your finding out the price to run the car is vastly different from just the purchase price.) There is no special tune, you take you car in to get it tuned-- simply tell them you want a tune for better mileage not for all out performance.

I would invest in a daily or watch your cruising speeds. Keep it under or around 65mph on the highway and mpg will increase. Intake and exhaust will help but not a whole lot

I have a Ralliart (same transmission as you smaller turbo and different ratio for final two gears for gas mileage) and I only get 14-20 city as well. On the highway when I took it to florida I got 28 though. The city/highway differential in mpg's is crazy on these cars mainly because of all of the components in the full-time awd system. It's a lot of moving parts to get going from a stop or from a slow speed.

Just wondering though, if you bought the car knowing that the mpg rating was 17/23, how were you expecting to get better then that with your specific driving conditions? Your averaging nearly exactly what the epa estimated mpg is

Sorry for the off topic. If you are going bigger turbo like fp red or black with supporting mod, then your mpg gets worse than stock turbo? My friend with fp red told me, he gets really bad mpg after installing red and getting tune by pro. No problem with tune at all.

I definitely understand, I was just curious. Good luck in your quest for better mpg's and let me know what you find out. Chances are I may want to do the same thing haha

I second a tune. This will use slightly less gas, but it isn't going to be largely noticeable. There were times on the highway with my MR and GSR I would get 24.x. I can live with that. I wouldn't expect anything more than that. If you need something better than that, I'd look at a different car. Next Evo is supposedly hybrid, maybe wait for that???
