Engine Exploded

I recently purchased a 2008 Lancer Evolution from a wholesale deal with a blown engine. The previous dealership said that someone was test driving the vehicle and when they were returning to the dealership pulling into driveway they heard a pop and cloud of white smoke came from under the hood.

I purchased a brand new engine however decided to dig deeper and look at the destruction of the bottom end. The connecting rod on cylinder one punched a hole threw both sides of the block and the oil pan. It also blew a chunk out of the piston and damaged 2 intake manifold valves in the head. The oil pump was destroyed along with the oil pump chain, oil pump gear, and both plastic oil pump chain guides.

Below are pictures, however do you think this much damage could have happened at low RPM?

Also if anyone needs a receipt list for how much this repair is going to cost with OEM parts let me know and I will post it.

Anything can happen when a rod breaks.

I bet it was already on its last leg and just happen to finally let go when they were pulling in. they probably had been driving it hard multiple times before that.

Agreed. It wasn't the slow test drive that killed it, that's just when it reared it's ugly head.

That just sounds like a bad case of the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXC2eoaw6Yw#t=15.

I wonder how many miles were on that engine.
