Popping noise from turbo area
Popping noise from turbo area
Hey guys, I just bought an Evo X about a week ago. After driving the 8 hours home I got a SES light literally a minute from my house. It ended up running lean because the cold air intake came a little loose.
Now I've been hearing a slight popping noise from the backside of the engine bay which seems to be coming from under the heat shield or the general area of the turbo. It has a bit of an exhaust note to the noise.
An old retired Chevrolet mechanic I know mentioned the wastegate but he also doesn't have much experience with turbo 4 cyl engines so I don't know how much validity there is to it.
Also, does anyone know someone in the Chico California area that would be a good option to look over the problem?

As an update, I pulled off the heat shield and found a large crack in the manifold.
At lower gears, it started making a crazy noise and vibrating a lot. I'm not sure if the crack got worse or if there is also something else wrong. As of now, the car is parked until I get the manifold shipped to me.
