Did you ever get this figured out? I had the MAP one and had the same problem. I ended up having to remove the trim below the steering wheel, the knee airbag, and the interior junction box out of the way. This allows you to see the master cylinder push rod head-on. From there you can use channel locks or long pliers to squeeze it in. It's most definitely a PITA.

The MAP one slides on pretty easy with very little effort... perhaps you forgot to remove the metal retaining wire? I've done at least 8 of these and never had that issue.

I think I got a defective part. Because eventually once I ordered a new ball cup for the master cylinder, it went on much easier than the first one I had although I still had to use pliers. I removed the safety pin prior to installation also. Both times it was just way too tight of a fit to get on without coming in from the front with pliers for me. I have to take it apart yet again to regrease the pivot point again. I'm going to use red n tacky red lithium grease this time in hopes it lasts permanently. I'm sick of the clutch pedal and master system assembly in the X.
