Get the BMW then if you still like the X you can trade your 3yr old car for it no sweat it has a broad appeal to American consumers. Mitsubishi builds crappy cars and yes I have owned a few from a GT0 - Gallant Mone Carlo (11yrs in the USAF) Owning this all new car is not a good idea based on Mitsubishis track record with its familiar drivetrains i.e U.S. spec trannys, t-cases, bearing ect. If you buy the X first you might have to pay someone to take it off you hands.
I guess I'm at the other end than most people here. While I will try the X, I suspect 11 lbs of sound deadening won't come close to turning a IX into something even half way to a 335 as far as NVH.
The price difference when buying is quite large as I think the prices the OP listed were for a loaded X vs. a stripped 335xi; however, BMWs tend to lease well so the BMW may actually be the same or cheaper for me despite the price difference similarly equipped. For instance, to lease a IX would have been roughly $700/mo. You can get all kinds of stuff for that money!
The VW R32 is actually much more of what I'm looking for. Something allwheeldrive and DSG with sporty handling and lots of luxury for not too much money per month on a lease. I'd also like to be able to mostly keep up with my wife in her IX in the real world which the R32 or 335xi would both do.
The biggest problem with the 335 is the lack of DSG. They're now offering shifter paddles for the slushbox so I may give that a whirl. Having owned a DSG car, I don't want to go back to manual, but as a past manual owner, I need a transmission that follows orders. Besides, on the 2 days per year I feel like having the full clutch and stick experience, I can steal my wife's IX!

Interesting, both are great cars, but as another said, seems like the OP is comparing a fully loaded MR vs. a pretty much stripped down 335i. Honestly until you see the EVO X MR in person and get an upclose and personal view of both cars, many would consider the 335xi the likely choice, but that could easily change once you sit in and drive both cars. Until then this is my opinion on both cars-
2008 EVO X MR vs. 2008 BMW 335xi
Price- EVO X MR (Fully loaded MR for less then a stripped down 335xi)
Exterior Styling- EVO X MR (Both cars look nice, but seeing the EVO X MR in person changes your view entirely)
Interior Styling and Comfort- BMW 335xi (Barely, I mean the EVO X MR is fully loaded and the BMW is not. The BMW interior is spacious and has good quality, but extremely boring).
Interior Space- Tie (Believe it or not the EVO has a lot space)
Power- Tie (Seriously, pay no attention to factory HP ratings, both cars are underrated and most likely will put the same power down to the wheels. I expect 260-280whp to be the norm for both cars)
Weight- EVO X MR (Can you believe it, the MR is actually lighter than another car).
Handling- EVO X MR (We all pretty much agree the EVO X will handle even better than a EVO IX MR).
Brakes- EVO X MR (EVO weighs a little less, and has massive brembo brakes).
Transmission- Tie (The MR SST seems like it is better than any auto BMW has for the 3-Series. But I have to give BMW credit for allowing the option of a 6-Speed manual),
Build and Customer Service- BMW 335xi (Nobody should doubt this, BMW builds great cars and has above average customer service).
Fun to Drive- ??????? (Drive both cars and you make the choice)
Aftermarket Potential- BMW 335xi (Only reason why I say BMW is because, we do not have a clue as of now how good the EVO X will be to mod).
So as you see, it is a lot closer in my opinion than you would think. This also makes me think that the EVO X is a better comparison to the 3 series, while the new STI is better compared to the 1 series.

I wouldnt give the Xi the nod for aftermarket potential. The Xi folks have 1 choice in coilover (KW Variant 3) and no sway choices. The Xi is not a big mod candidate.
Also I'd much rather have a DSG type tranny than an auto. I think most would.
Don't forget the horrible runflats on the BMW!

I second Todd's comment.
Seems like we are still comparing apples and oranges. I say that because it is similar to a debate I hear among motorcycle owners. Some begin to consider trading in for a cruiser after taking long rides. It's really hard to comapre a crothc rocket and a cruiser. They are built for different purposes. I feel the same goes for the afformentioned cars.

I didn't think it was an apples to oranges post since mitsu is moving the X upmarket and made the car a little less extreme. I think both cars are equally equipped, i would give the initial nod to the 335xi because i heard with a procede chip you could gain 100hp to the wheels, plus i ordered the sport pack with 6 speed manual for $800 to try to keep up with the X in the corners but i haven't decided yet.

These are definitely two very different cars that will have two very different personalities. The Evo is a now more comfortable track-oriented car versus the BMW, which is a comfortable, well-balanced, sporty sedan with an AWD system that caters to getting you out of a dire situation - not getting you around a track as quickly as possible. You won't find an ACD or AYC on that BMW's AWD.
If you're all about performance - Get the Evo.
If you're all about comfort with a bit of sportiness - Get the BMW.

i dont think this is a good comparison as one is more of a tuner favourite car (and also for performance minded drivers) and the BMW is (keyword: mainly) for the average, daily drivers (i.e. my dad would probably think about buying a BMW 335XI, but not an EVO X)
You can not compare awd system on evo to 335 no way at the same time do not compare an evo to a 335 two different cars period evo is made for all around racing thats what there awd system is made for NOT for you to get better grip in rain or snow unlike bmw awd system
