They sold the "RS" here as a streetable car because they knew Americans would buy them for street use. But to criticize the JDM RS model for being a stripped down model is just beyond funny, and really emphasizes the fact that the USA is in its own little world, totally oblivious to how the rest of the world thinks.

I may be incorrect, but didn't the IX RS sell out first in the US, meaning it is the most difficult IX to find? There is obviously a demand for the RS now, whether it is to build a race car or to have for street use. I know a whole bunch of people who are skipping right over the GSR and MR trims and waiting for the possible/probable RS when the X is released. I think a barebones kit is much easier customized than something that comes complete. It’s also a lot more fun.

when we can buy the rs model really stripped (no interior, no wheels/brakes, etc...) then that would be nice to put on a few choice items & drive off the showroom floor already hooked up. like the old muscle cars in the 60's were. there were hundreds of dealer options for those cars.

warranty wouldn't even b an issue really bcuz the US is the only country where cars have a warranty. everywhere else in the world, buying a car is like buying a dvd player, u just buy it!
Just as an example, when the mustang first debued there was the car itself, and then more options than you could shake a stick at. People loved having the power to take a car and really make it their own with the options that they wanted. Then the factories started to group options together - you cant have option B without first adding option A. Then factories grouped similar packages together. Now it is too the point that we are given a car and all we choose is the color Give me a base car with a laundry list of options and let me decide what i want and dont want.

Unfortunately the days of stripped down 'bare bones' models are long gone and you can thank your local government representative for that. Because all mass produced cars sold for street use in the US must come with front/side airbags as standard and soon, traction control will be mandatory as well. Hey, even big corporations can't fight the man.

The RS sold pretty well because it was $2-$3g's cheaper then the GSR. It wasn't that most consumers wanted a stripper model, it's what they could afford. Mitsu. was only making approx. $900 bucks a car, where the profit margins for the GSR and MR were double that number. So if you were Mitsu., from a business standpoint, which makes more sense to build at launch?

As somebody else mentioned already in the thread, cars in Japan has always been limited to 180km/h.

Didnt you watch F&F3 Tokyo drift?

because the tires rims and brakes are not that good as the other trims, so they limit the top speed where the tires are limited... You can't sell car rated for 155 mp/h and the tires are good for 110 mp/h.
Pluss Who ever buy the RS in normal circumstences they will build some type of race car. There for they will change the breaks ,the tires , the ECU, seats ,etc. Why so hard to understand for some the RS is NOT for the "public". But if some will buy it, making sure they will covered, if anything happends when they going home or the garage...

No to mention that the IX RSs ordered from Japan has thinner window glass, no sound deadening, no A/C, no AYC (car is faster in the hands of a good driver without AYC), a different faster spooling turbo (the tial turbo is nothing new for the X RS...real RS's have had them for years in different versions) and the 5 speed rather than the fragile 6. Big difference in weight as well. Although of course you can get close simply by stripping a GSR.

If you want a comprehensive list of the differences between the IX models in Japan check this link.

http://www.japanvehicles.com/newcars.../Evo9/main.htm

You see this mirrored in the new model. Still has none of the above and it sticks to the 5 speed because Mitsubishi are obviously not confident enough in the SST to use it in their competition specials. In fact we've had it straight from the MMA Ralliart boss here in Australia that if you want to mod you're X, you'd be "safer" with the 5 speed.

Specs for JDM X's.

Look at the weight of these lard *****!

We had the official launch of the X here in my home town in Australia last night. Nice looking car and the interior is much nicer than the IX, but I didn't even feel the slightest stirrings to buy one. They are mitusbishi's new M3 if you ask me.

so is the decision:

1) buy a X MR model so u have a decent DD like an STI (only not as reliable as the STI).

2) buy a X bcuz ur girlfriend is getting tired of breaking heels, messing up her hair, & tearing dresses climbing over ur VIII/IX rollcage.

3) buy a X bcuz being a newer heavier (&safer) model it is cheaper on insurance.

4) keep what u have & continue to be labeled has a FnF driver with a cheap interior + have ppl ask u y ur car looks like a shopping cart?

5) keep ur VIII/IX & buy a X to have the best of both worlds Mitsu wise.

6) look for a deal on an '06 STI as a better DD alternative to a X.

7) wait for a tuner to take a SST X & make 600+whp b4 being convinced since an auto shifts faster than we can.

8) wait to c if u can get the RS model & do as u wish mod wise.

No, it's not because they are faster. Where active diffs are not used, it is likely due to regulations, high maintenance/cost/reliability issues, or lack of understanding of the systems. Active diffs have only been recently banned in WRC spec cars. Before that, they used them to make the car faster around corners, to win races. They still would use them today had there not been the ban. You cannot argue the point that the FIA changed the rules to force the drivers to go faster, because they were making the wrong choice with the with "nanny computers" using "traction control" because the drivers don't know what they are doing and they want to weed them out. That point would be ridiculous. The real reason is, the active diffs are faster, and the team with the most money for developing those diffs go faster. They are all limited to 300bhp, so it's mostly about developing the other systems that wins races. If active diffs truly were worse, they would not have needed that rule, because nobody would bother with all the time and money to maintain them if it meant being slower.

I'm not certain what the regulations are for Grou-N, which is the likely destination for the majority of true "RS" Evos (not streetable versions like here in the US), but I would be surprised if they were not against the sporting regs.

I love it when people say, "not as reliable as a STi"

Buddy, you obviously don't know Subarus.
