So I was just taking a look at the 2008 Car and Driver's new Car Buyers Guide and of course I paged ahead to the Evo X. Here is what C&D had to say in their review:
Highs: High fun factor, more mature styling; Super-All-Wheel Control can work magic, using four different systems to keep the Evo on its intended path
Comment: The "Highs" are the best part, it gets better....
Lows: Less communicative than the previous car, don't expect a cushy ride or silent cruising.
Comment: We all know by now that the Evo has lost that nicotine latched onto the brain neuro-sensor "oneness". Thank god it DOESN'T have a cushy ride.
Behind the Wheel: Duller steering and a bit slower than before, this Evo has lost some of the outlaw feel of previous editions. Its still a raging hoot to drive, though.
Comment: "Duller steering and a bit slower than before..." Wow. Even understanding all the excitement with its new launch, the bottom line is a flagship performance car should not go backwards when it comes to performance. Here's hoping Mitubishi made the right decision when it decided to dull the sharpest knife in its arsenal.

Grows Up
Like the name says, Evolution. The car is growing up, just like the 911 or the new M3. I personally can't wait. I've had an XIII, sti and have a IX. The car is growing up a little, that's all.
Some reputable magazines are clearly disappointed in the X. That's what's stunning about it.
mrdevo9mr, I'd love to see a pic of the Evo XIII (13). Sorry. Just had to give you a hard time 'bout that. I know you meant VIII (8).

Listen everyone. Who here actually listens to a review and purchases based on it?
If i did that I would've never seen half the movies that got bad reviews, not dated certain girls, and never owned an Evo VIII becuase some places said it wasn't all great.
Buy an X if you want one. Stop reading magazines and blogs to get a review. Go out and test drive one, otherwise quit knocking the damn car. It's NOT EVEN OUT YET!

After reading the latest edmunds review of the X GSR and finding out that, speedwise, it's not that much different from the IX, I'm starting to build up hope that the X will eventually prove to be a true Evo in it's own right. Man, now the decision to trade up or not has gotten harder!

I spent over a year researching before I bought my IX RS. Could've bought the MR or GSR, but decided on the RS after reading countless reviews on the VIII and IX, hell, even on the VII and some early, early info about the X. I even scoured EvoM tirelessly. All the magazines that are lightly bashing the X raved about the VIII and IX. They LOVED it to death. Automobile Mag' even made it their 2004 car of the year.
All the research paid off. I have not one regret. I didn't even test drive my car before I bought it. I knew it was all that I wanted in a car. I was right. That's just it: I KNEW. I was in the know. I refuse to be reckless and buy expensive things blindly. I'm not that rich, dude.

clearly disappointed? almost every review has said that the X is heavier, slower and a tad less communicative, BUT is a better overall package. personal opinions of the reviewers may be that they'd choose the IX but they never said the IX is a better car overall than the X. you can say that magazines are paid off by the car companies and or it's part of their job to gloss over bad cars, but the fact remains that almost every review has liked the car....albeit not necessarily as much as the IX

My biggest (and possibly only) complaint about that argument is that change does not always mean improvement. This is a car made by a car manufacturer looking to save money and cut down on emissions, which means performance comes second. For a car such as an Evo, that's not the kind of "evolution" I like to see.
When I see the benefits of the new engine, and the superiority of the new transmission (from the MR model) then I'll sing a different tune. Until then all I'm seeing is Mitsubishi changing things to make the car more accessible--not to further the tradition of rally god.

Before you X fanboys start ganging up on me, understand this: If only you guys could have the chance to own both a IX and a X. Drive one one day and the other the next day. Alternate daily for a good month. I'd love to hear what you guys would say after that experience.
Understand also that Mitsubishi reads these forums. They just might listen to our complaints and build the X that we want. I, for one, want an Evo Sportback RS version. The attached thumbnail is an image of the Concept Sportback.
There's one thing that I absolutely love about the X over the IX. That it's a safer car in a collision. The side impact protection specifically.
