No, it has a sensor on the inside of the handle on the driver & passenger car so you just put your hand behind there, it beeps, you pull and you're in. There is a 'dummy' key in the ignition that you turn to start the car. The black button on the door is used to lock the car so you push it after getting out and walk away.

I've heard so many descriptions that are conflicting of one another that the whole idea sounds more complicated than i'm sure it is...

 

What happens if you start the car and want to leave it running while you go inside for something? Does it shut off automatically when you walk away with the fob, while its running?

 

No it doesn't shut off, it just beeps for a few seconds and the information center says something about "looking for a key".

 

So it could still be stolen while running, but then not restarted without the fob?

 

I know that's how the Infiniti one works, I would assume it works the same way.

 

This is exactly how it works.

 

I don't think the car will drive anywhere without the key present. At least that's how it works on the Lexus system.

Basically the unit that he provided a picture of, what most would consider the "keyless entry remote," actually communicates with the car to identify you as the authorized user... at that point the door will unlock and allow access, without you ever having to push a button on the keyless entry remote.

Along with that, when you go to start the car, as long as the key fob is within range, it will allow you to start the car withOUT a key, but only the person who has the key fob on-hand.

My vette uses the same thing, very cool... the only annoying part is that if you have a passenger, they have to wait until you open your door before the passenger door will unlock to allow the passenger access. On the otherhand, you could just push the unlock button on the remote, but that takes too much effort.

And yes I have handed the car off to a valet attendant... with the keys in MY pocket, when I walked outside he was hauling *** down the street because he stalled it in the middle of the road! Haha, it was some funny shi t.

yes, this is a very convenient feature indeed. I carry a huge bundle of keys, and in the past it would always poke my knee and scratch up the interior plastics a bit from time to time. Thankfully, I do not have to go through this ritual again. If you're lazy like me, its also nice that the only time you need to take the key out, is to lock the doors, or open passenger doors/trunk.

This isn't something I would pay a lot of by itself, but as a part of the reasonably priced sss pacakge, it is certainly a welcome luxury.

 

How many times have you seen in the movies when someone is being chased and they get to their car and they end up trying to find their keys and fumble them trying to find the right one to unlock the car and then it takes a couple tries to get the key into the ignition? You can be happy you won't be that person.

Seriously though, my wife has a similar system on her Murano and there's nothing like getting in the car, starting it and just start driving without using a key. It may not seem like a big deal until you get used to it and then you'll wish every car had it.

It's also the perfect setup for adding push button start.

what happens if the battery dies in the fob? You have to drive to radio shack to buy a new battery? BUT YOU CANT BECAUSE THE BATTERY IS DEAD! OH SNAP (yes, i justed type that. i need punished)
