Hey guys, just a few ?'s
Hey guys, I am in the market for a new car and I never really considered the EVO X but seeing there are so many sitting on dealers lots, I thought I could prob get a deal. I havent checked them out in person, just wanted to get some pros and cons from owners themselves. I am currently in a Boosted Mustang and It just keeps breaking. Please, no stupid posts about (F.O.R.D and whatever it means) Lets keep this on a mature level and I think you guys have more maturity anyways.
I was seeing how it rides. Smooth, a little bumpy, stiff? I do know its height is relative to a Tonka Truck.
Hows the trans, very easy to drive? Clutch pedal stiff or way soft? Ive been worried to get an AWD car b/c I drag race mostly. But my roomie has a EVO8 with 390 hp i believe and running 12 flats with half summer half winter tires. lol.
Whats the mpg? I know i could prob look this up, but their MPG is over rated. Trying to get real live people facts. lol.
If there is anything I should know about the car, please let me know. I really want a reliable, decently quick car (stock) and 4 doors. Im stuck between this car, the EVO IX (but afraid to get one abused), '01+ BMW White M3 Vert, or some sort of SRT line. I appreciate the help.

~also...wheres the section for pics? I'd like to get some ideas~

PICS on the show and shine section. as for info on the evo. clutch and all is smooth and u can get semi auto on the MR. the body is more stiff than the other, according to most tests, the GSR does 0-60 in about 4.7 seconds and MR is said to have better time. the 1/4 mile its in the 13s. it was rated 2nd fastest in 0-60 sedan, SRT 8 charger being the first. as for gas, its a gas guzler and its like 17/22 i believe. IF you live on the east coast, you better have some nasty negotiation skills or have some friends if not the dealer will always try to push a mark-up on it.
from what ive read, the X over all feels better than the IX. but, IX got more of that raw pocker kick and better steering wheel feel. mostly because of the extra weight on the x. besides that, the X outshines the IX in just about anything.
keep in mind, AWD is great to get a good start off the line but, EVO isnt a drag car. where it shines is in the twist and turns. still, you can take out most of the cars on tha road stock. =P
anyways, good luck!

At current prices, if you're also considering a IX, I'd go with the IX. IX part availability and third party support is so vast that you would have no trouble finding excellent, reliable upgrades and repair centers backed by large amounts of research and experience.
The 4G63 engine is known to be able to take a pretty good beating. Even if you have a problem like an engine failure, there are so many vendors that can do engine rebuilds with like-new results.

I came over from Mustangs also, but the last one I ran I sold off in 2004. It was an 880 rwhp single turbo 88 notch. I had a 2004 GTO since then but traded it in last year (minivan for wife), and have ordered and am awaiting shipment of an EvoX.
To answer the questions with comparisons you may know. The ride is nice, not Mustang-ish at all. It handles a whole lot better, there's really no comparison. The trans, in my test drive, felt alot like a Tremec 3550/TKO with a stock shifter. Not fantastic but not horrible either. The clutch felt a little like a King Cobra, effort wise. Not as heavy as a HD pressure plate, but not exactly stock Mustang like either. Granted, the stock Evo clutch doesn't appear to be to fantastic, assuming you read the threads on this forum.
To address the new engine vs old engine argument. The 4G63, which has proven to be a great engine, has a huge amount of aftermarket support right now, but it is a relatively dated engine. The 4B11 which is new, is a newer design and has advantages of efficiency (read the forums), but lesser aftermarket support, for now. In my experience, in 1996 everyone had a hissy fit when Ford went to the mod motor Mustang and dropped the 5.0, and in the 1997/1998 Corvette/F-body when GM went to the LSx engine family and dropped the LTx engine family, everyone had the same hissy fit. It took some time for the aftermarket to catch up, but at this point in time, nobody is really questioning the decision, because the new engines have proven to be better than the old engines. The same will happen with the 4B11 and 4G63. Give it a year or so, the aftermarket will catch up. The 4B11 EvoX has only been available in the USA for about two months now. There has already been huge progress from the aftermarket in this short time period.

I'm no expert but, considering now one answered your question, I will give it a shot.
NOW, there is a huge dif. The GSR is the base model and the MR is the top of the line.
GSR: < MR:
Main thing about GSR is that it's a manual tranny. It doens't bring all the stuff the MR brings standard. For example, HID and larger wing. The MR is NOT maual. It's a sport based semi-auto called SST (forgot what the hell it stands for) Basically, you can set the car for auto or you can change the gears yourself WITHOUT the clutch pedal. Now, the highlight of this tranny is that it has a twin clutch paddle shifting system. Like F1 racers and most expensive performance cars now, you can shift your gears with some padles on the steering wheel. The tranny has two clutches, one for the odd numbers and one for the even. For example, one clutch selects 1,3,5 while other is 2,4,6. Lets say you are in 1st gear, the other clutch already got the 2nd gear selected and ready to roll. All you need to do is shift up and it will change lighting fast. It's said that it WILL shift faster than most pro drivers therefore, you got little to no delay while changing gears. Now, reason why everyone is *****y about MR is cause of the tranny. Considering this is the first for Mitsu and it's in a highly technological computerized car. There is a possibility that it will reach a peak of how much power it can handle. Where the GSR is said to be easier to tune and capable of holding a lot more power. Another thing the MR got over the GSR is the suspension, some exterior details and some sound reduction crap to make the ride at high speeds quieter and smoother.
They both bring similar packages to add stuff to it. Like the Aero Kit (gives it more aero dynamics and some mean agressive styling). Technology package for the sound system and Navigation. Sport package for a nicer interior (just the shift knob and e-brake. they get some aliminum plating on it). And a few other things.
All in all, the MR is the better car and for obvious reasons it will cost more. A fully loaded GSR can cost about 40k. A fully loady MR should be about 5k more or so. No one knows the price yet.
I might have left some stuff out but, this is the most important things to get you going. Hope it helped ya, homie. Good luck!

back in the day, the differences werent a whole lot. it was mainly for looks and crap rather than different performance.
