+14.8hp with a K&N airfilter?

I was reading a magazine called DSPORT at Barnes & Noble - it had a few "easy" mods for the EVO X, the simplest one being a K&N filter for a whopping +14.8hp!

It's hard to believe a simple airfilter swap gives this much power but they had a before and after dyno chart!

Has anybody actually done this mod? What was your actual gain?

It leans out the incredibly rich mixture, thus making great power.

I remember when k&n claimed 14whp with their "Typhoon" on the VIII. What they forgot in their ad was a negative sign (-) behind the 14.

Is the one for the X a panel or a cone?

It's a panel filter, but I don't think they have officially released it yet. I read that article it also, what did you think about that 7 awhp gain from changing to royal purple oil.

It's not that crazy since air filters for vettes and such get like 30hp boost.

Noooo way I am putting anything other than Mobil-1 in any of my cars.
It's proven, and it's OEM in some of the finest cars, including the EVO.

How can an airfilter lean the mixture?
The ECU will get a higher reading from the MAF, the air to fuel ratio should be the same.

doesnt happen. Check out all the dynos that have been done. The ECU doesnt add any fuel to compensate for the increased air flow, thus it gets leaned out resulting in more power.

Remember 1 thing with the K&N or any other Wetted Gauze filter.... They flow a lot of dirt to be able to flow that air... Flowing Dirt... Baaaaad

AMSOIL has new Nano-Fiber Technology that flows as well as a Wetted Gauze and filters up to 50 Times better. Flowing Filtered Air.... Gooooood

It is a cleanable filter with either a Light Vacuum or LIGHT Air Pressure. Less expensive usually, No messy washing, No waiting to dry 3 days and No hoping you have the right amount of oil on the media.

This is a filter thread, not an oil thread.

I don't believe the claim. I made 8whp with a panel filter, but it was inconclusive since the runs weren't repeatable every time.

yeah i want to know more about the filter as well. K&N doesnt even list it on their website. What filter was the article referring to?

In many cases you will gain HP over a Stock filter when using a K&N or similar wetted gauze filter BUT you lose Filter efficiency and virtually Sand an engine over time..

With the use of the New AMSOIL Nano-Fiber filters, you get the Flow of a Wetted Gauze filter and also have the most efficient filter on the market..

Stop plugging your Amsoil, especially since you aren't a forum vendor/sponsor. I am surprised the moderators of this board have let it go on for so long...be glad you don't post on the Mitsu board I moderate. Not everyone thinks its the greatest stuff since sliced bread. Sorry that I don't believe your claims of flowing just as well as a K&N yet filtering 50x better. K&N filters perform very well and have been proven to filter fine in tests/comparisons. If you want to step up to something a bit better than a K&N filter check out AFE. AFE was started by an ex-K&N employee who was able to improve a few minor things over K&N.
