EVO X w/SSS, not sure if I want to start modding!!
Hi everyone, let me go ahead and introduce myself since I've been on the forums for the past like three months already. I just got a PB EVO X w/SSS and the Sport Interior Package. I bought it this past Saturday and I've already put on 847 miles (^_^).
I've ran it a few times already and I just love how it boosts cleanly up to 7600rpm. Apparently, mine's already been reflashed from the factory and it doesn't seem to have any upper RPM stutter like a lot of ppl have had. I'm not sure if that'll start happening later on, but let's hope not!!
Now, to the modding. I'm not sure if I wanna do mods like Exhaust (both cat and turbo back), intake (heard not really necessary after a tune), U/LICP, FMIC, and tune. The only reason why I don't think I wanna do it, is simply because, "what's the point?"
I like modding because it separates me from the rest of the group and I'm not too big of a fan with everything OEM. But of course, sometimes you gotta take a step back and look at the big picture. If I mod the EVO X with all those performance parts, what's the point? I'm not going to be drag racing it, all that extra WHP that I can gain aren't really gonna be useful if I'm doing things like rally racing and track (road) racing over at Infineon and Thunder Hill.
Can someone please help me out with this? Would there really be a point in modding the EVO X (performance wise) if I'm not gonna be drag racing it? Please correct me if I'm wrong and PLEASE, don't go off and start flaming me for differences in opinion.

I'm in the same boat (just bought this week, but mine wasn't reflashed apparently).
My understanding is that the FMIC, U/LICP and tune help to smooth out the power (in addition to giving you more) so that it comes on quicker and stays on. If you look at some of the before and after dynos, the power starts up, then peaks then drops. In some tunes, it peaks then flattens (which is way better).
I'm not sold on the intake, but the exhaust definitely makes the car sound better!

On previous evo's getting a tune would make the power much smoother along with better mpg. As far as track days modding with a few parts will in most cases allow you to come on boost a little sooner, and give you a little more speed.
In most cases you purchased an evo which is a 4 door sports car. With previous models a few grand would give you a 10-20% increase in power with a smoother driving car. Sounds like a win/win for most. Enjoy the new car. When it starts to feel slow add a few parts.

So Chuynh, you think that more power wouldn't benefit you on a road race course? I guess you don't know much about cars, so let me break it down for you. It's all about usable power under the curve when it comes to road racing. The focus of modding an engine for road racing is on mid rpm power more so than top rpm power, but it really depends on the track. If you were to look at a 500 hp evo vs a 1000 hp evo on a technical track then the 1000 hp evo would get it's *** kicked because to make that much power it would have to be running a turbo so big that it would hve no ***** down low and thus no power coming out of the turns.
However, that same 500 hp evo would walk all over a stock evo even if it has a little bit more lag due to a slightly bigger turbo because it trades only a little bit of spool time for a LOT more power. Especially consider that if you took a stock evo X and ran it against a X with nothing more than a reflash, the tuned X would absolutely crush the stock X because they would both be on the same sized turbo and the tuned X would spool faster, it would hit harder and make more power everywhere under the curve, and have more top end power. So to answer your question, that's why you should modify your car.

I undrestand your concern, especially if you are worried about maintaining your warranty. The only issue that I would have is, do you have a warranty right now even though it IS stock? Mitsubishi and Subaru are notorious for voiding warranties due to "abuse". So what is abuse and who decides when it has been abused? The dealer decides what it is, and they decide if it has been abused. There was a guy on here somewhere who had a warranty voided due to "abuse" even though his car was bone stock. His clutch was even good, but his tires were "feathered" so that was clearly indicative of abuse...
So the qusetion is, do you even have a warranty right now? I guess that it depends on the dealer, but it is a coin toss one way or another.

Get a TBE, UICP, Tune... DONE. It will give you smoother/larger power bands. As far as the warranty goes, if you are already driving your car to 7600 rpm, they can already get your for "abuse"...
