Weight saving

Just curious what you evo X owners are doing to lose weight with your cars if any have done so. Any venders with any experience yet or you track guys. I'd like to move out of my IX soon and pick up a X or keep both.

I'm taking venom. Cheapest way to drop weight in the car

The spare is super heavy, so when you track it take it out. The sub is really heavy too, but it's hard to get out (well hard enough to not want to do all the time).

the problem with dropping weight on the car is if it is a lot it can affect the natural balance of the car.

But here are some ideas;
Lighter Rims
Lose Spare and tools
Lightweight Battery

Also your weight matters too so if your a fatty it couldn't hurt to lose some weight yourself.

Oh yea, was talking to the dealer about the MR today and apparently the two piece rotors on the MR are much lighter than the ones on the GSR.

Being that the car is front engined, wouldn't it make more sense to remove weight up front with like a CF hood and front fenders before taking out the battery, spare, and tools so to get closer to the magical 50/50 weight balance?

But the hood is already quite light so I'm not sure how much savings there can be had. I wonder which is more important to lap times, weight balance or weight savings? If you take a car that say had a 50/50 balance and weighed 3,200/lbs and then took that exact car and removed 200/lbs from only the back of the car so the weight balance shifted to be a little more front heavy, would it still be faster around a track? Maybe you'd have to re-tune your suspension set up at that point though...

Thoughts from the track experts?

^ Yea I have a similar question. Whatever weight is eventually removed, how does corner balancing with adjustable suspension parts (coilovers, etc) play into this? Does corner weighting offset or negate any bad affects of unevenly distributed weight?

Ya, but you got to think all thoes evo x that are str8 for track are gutted to hell and they are running pretty damn good. Now if they re-tuned the suspension i have no idea but lighter is always better. And replacing the battery and spare tire, ect we do first becuase it is the easiest to do first. CB hood you looking at about 1,000 bucks. Everything were talking about is free. light weight battery is what $150.00. Just my $.02.

I did some hunting around in the trunk on my new Evo X today, I have barely over 100 miles on her so far but she needed to lose some weight...

They designed the trunk area really well as the carpet insert is actually fitted to match the floor once you remove the spare, jack, tools, and foam inserts. It's almost like they knew you were going to remove them!

40.2 Lbs - Spare tire

7.8 Lbs - Foam Inserts with Jack and Tools

48.0 Lbs - Total weight savings

I used a few plastic foam inserts cut to about 3" to stiffen the floor a bit. They were from my computer display and cut easily and didn't splinter like those styrofoam ones so it was a mess free mod.

Next I looked at the stock battery and was amazed at what I found:

33.5 Lbs - Stock vented EVO X battery

35.5 Lbs - Optima Spiral cell Deep Cycle battery

Looks like the stock battery is quite decent weight wise, it was a Panasonic brand and may have possibly been a spiral cell but was hard to tell with the casing. I decided to leave it in for now since it's 2 lbs less than the aftermarket one I had in my Evo 8! Since I plan on driving this in the winter for now, getting a mini battery isn't in the cards.

As far as corner weighting, a street car will almost always benefit from just losing weight regardless of balance front to back as the improvement to acceleration and braking is noticeable. Since (hopefully?) most people aren't hanging their cars in turns at 100% grip where corner weighting would make a difference it would likey be only in a gutted race car at the track where weight balance would be a factor over just losing the weight.

33.5lbs is super heavy compared to the sub 10lb light battery kits though, in the X you would be shaving this weight from the rear but as its been said, weight savings is never bad. If it had a 50/50 weight distribution it would help it be more predictable in corners but if you're changing it slightly the car isn't going to go from holding the corner to plowing off into the dirt. Lighter rims and coil overs should save alot

http://www.gates311.com/

check out the evo updates section and the post "weight loss" where Ryan details how he pulled a lot of weight out of his car & plans to take more out.

Weight Loss

Friday, March 14, 2008
In preparation for the upcoming RTA @ Buttonwillow as well as the NASA TT season, I started off by taking some weight out of the car. All of this was done in under 45 mins, very easy to do, and all is very easily put back. Ill post some pics I took as well as a list of the weight.

Removed:

Trunk walls: -2.0 lbs
Battery cover: -3.0 lbs
Tools: -6.8 lbs
Trunk/Hood plastic: -.8 lbs
Subwoofer: -16.0 lbs
Spare tire: -40.2 lbs
Spare cover: -4.0 lbs
Rear seats: -40.2 lbs
Washer fluid: -12.4 lbs
All bolts: -.6 lbs
Floor mats: -5.4 lbs.

Total as of 3/11/08 = -131.4 bs

That's a summary of his writeup, I also noticed some sound deadening material below the spare tire location that could likely be removed if you wanted to really get down and dirty. Not sure how much weight the rear wing adds, but a lightweight "non ricey" one could be a good swap but it's hard to make those look like they belong on the car.

Yeah he also talks about brake rotors, coilovers, new seats, etc. Which if memory serves was another 75-100 lbs he was hoping for.

I have another post showing the removal of the bottom ic bracket, which saves 6 lbs.
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=350601

Just bend some aluminum to use for new brackets. I have a spare set I made too.
We need more weight off the front of the car expecially in front of the front wheels.
