Warranty

Hey
I am an Evo X GSR
I want to do some modification on my car, but my dealership won't allow me to.
They say if I do anything to the engine, even a small stuff, they will void my warranty immediately.
All i want is a drop in air intake.
anyone got any info about this? or are they just being a bi7ch.
i am in Indianapolis. my dealership i Rayskillman West Side.
Thanks

some dealers are more strict on mods than others. try different dealership. some offer installation of aftermarket parts.. one way to keep your warranty

an intake won't void your warranty unless it is proven to have caused the problem. like if you put on a CAI and drove through 3 foot of water and hydrolocked your motor than they could void your warrenty.

If you read the warranty, they can deny a claim simply because the intake is a modification, end of story. I'm certainly not saying they will but is possible, but if you modify you are taking a risk, even if it is as simple as an intake.

Warranty claims are not really up to the dealer, Mitsubishi basically approves every single claim (a lot of times in advance) so it is not up to the dealer, it's Mitsubishi's money.

I have seen a warranty claim denied on a pickup transmission stating the vehicle was modified, it had a K & N intake. This had nothing to do with the problem but they still wouldn't pay and the customer had to pay.

Vehicle owners are protected by federal law-The Magnuson-Moss Warranty – Federal Trade Commission Improvement Act of 1975. Under the Magnuson-Moss Act, after market equipment which improves performance does not void a vehicle manufacturer’s original warranty.

If a Lancer Evolution is brought to Mitsubishi Motors dealer for a diagnosis as to a possible warrantable condition and the dealer determines that modifications were made that may have caused the problem, or could be instrumental in causing future problems, the repair will not be covered. The dealer and if necessary, MMNA staff, investigate each case, always giving the owner the benefit of the doubt. If the dealer does indeed find that serious vehicle modifications have been made that relate to a vehicle problem and/or damages, then it is possible that a restriction will be placed on that vehicle's warranty coverage as it relates to the specific modification, damaged component(s) and impacted vehicle systems. The entire vehicle warranty is not voided

Sounds like it would have to have caused the problem for it not to be covered but I could be wrong and probably am. Anyone else know for sure?

^^ You can scream Magnusson Moss warranty until you're blue in the face at some Mitsubishi service managers, they don't care. What are you going to do ? Bring them to court? And pay lawyers fees and court charges that will probably equal or exceed the amount of money it would take to repair your car in the first place ?

Sometimes its more trouble than its worth. Usually if a service manager gives you **** for a mod, you can call MMNA and request a review from a district service manager, but good luck with all that...

If you want to do anything exciting to your Evo, then I believe the word warranty will become meaningless. I just said, "The hell with the warranty." ....And I proceeded with my mods. There we go.

Sucks though, if you bought your car new... You paid for the warranty... I wish car dealers would offer cars sans warranty... If I could pay 3 grand less than South Coast's pricing on the Evo Xs and have no warranty, I'd seriously debate trading the C4 in for a X... But I'm not paying an extra x amount of money for something I don't really have.

Here in Cali there is a law saying that aftermarket parts cannot void warranty unless that part caused the void in warranty. Just as the filter hydrolocking the engine example. My dealer told me I can to a TBE and CAI, but not to do a flash. hmmmm I did all of those things and car is running fine so mod away OP

Actually K&N will go to battle for you if you have them call the dealership, especially for just a drop in air filter... Worst case you could replace the filter with the paper when whenever you make a visit but for them to say they will void your warranty with a drop in K&N is rediculous!

Part of it is they generally frown on modifications when there is a chance that they could be causing the warranty issues, expecially if the owned appears misinformed or not mechanically inclined. I ended up making friends with the dealership by bringing the car there for oil changes and basic service that was covered under warranty for my Eclipse, then the Evo 8 and now the Evo X. Since they know me, they know I won't pull the wool over their eyes if a mod directly caused a warranty problem, but if it wasn't related they would now give me the benefit of the doubt since I'm a regular customer. I would look for another dealership in the area and if none are available, start making friends there and start the long road of educating them of how carefull modding (and driving!) shouldn't instantly void your warranty.

They recently did the Rev 2 flash for me and they wanted a report of how the car did in stock form at the drag strip. I called the following Monday and they were happy with the feedback that the hesitation issues were gone. I also mentioned how I cleaned up the shifter bushings, put a stiffer motor mount in as well as an AMS intake system that all improved the car. I guess every dealership has it's own way of doing things.

looks like there are two to three other mitsu dealerships around you and probably a fourth one thats 100 miles away. So you have options. Basically the people you need to make friends with at the dealers are the service managers. Service managers can do anything for you. When I had my 02 Mustang, a ford dealership lowered it for me, did alignment after lowering the car, installed a catback for me, all at decent prices just because I used to chop it up with the service manager while waiting for my car getting an oil change. Dont talk about modding the car right away, slowly get into it. The talk is bound to happen, its a EVO

I'm going to assume you're joking about that last part.
