Short Shifter.. Yes or No?

I hoping to get everyones opinion on a short shifter. I was at the track last week and ran a 13.0 with my stock shifter. I would shift with no problems what so ever, completely smooth at about 7500rpm which I am told is to high to shift anyway. Then I installed the AP short shifter and ran it yesterday and my best time was 13.5 and the other 5 runs were around 13.9 to 14.1.... I kept missing third. It seemed like it was split down the middle at the track some people said they loved their short shifter, the others said not for them... So, what do you guys think. Do I just need to get used to the shifter and shift at 6800-7000rpm, or should I swap back to the stock shifter? I ran the 13.5 last night when I shifted at 7000rpm and FINALLY made it into 3rd. I'm pretty sure it is just driver error and I just need to get used to the shifter but I thought I'd see what you guys think of short shifters anyway...

Thanks!!

when i 1st installed my short shifter on my 08 lancer, i hated it at 1st, it was so hard 2 shift, but as time went on... now i love it, i think its cause i got use 2 it, and also it got easyer 2 shift over time

im sure u just have to let the thing settle in, id say give it a few weeks- month and then decide on taking it off or not

I think it will be your shifting habits, wait a while like ghetto said above and then decide. I've driven a porsche boxter with the short shifter and loved it, but had to make a concious effort to shift differently to when I shifted a normal long throw box.

You need a poll to tell you that the new shifter sucks??? It doesn't work for you, but the original one does so... the oem one is paid for..know what I mean?

Assuming this is your daily driver, which shifter do you prefer for regular day-to-day use? The difference in your times could change as you get used to the new shifter. But 1/4 times aside, if the short shifter doesn't make driving more fun then get rid of it.

Very good feedback guys thanks!!!

Manboy - It is my daily and it does make it more fun to drive, so you are 100% right.

I think all of you are right I just need to give it time and I will adjust. I mean it was my first track visit since I installed so I just need to be patient and I am sure like you said Aar0nsite my times will hopefully even improve.

Thanks!

its all about personal preference. like someone said above, it prob wont shave that much time off your 1/4 but its all about what you like. Ive always had a short shifter on my cars, love the rifle like shifting and firm lock it gives the shifter. going and driving other peoples cars w/o them just seems plain and boring. I understand about you missing third, happens to me sometimes when i race as well. like all the others said, give er some time and see how she feels, its a hate it or love it type of thing. keep us posted!

I've heard alot of bad things about having a short shifter. Mainly that over time it's a bit harder on the trans and should be avoided. Honestly if you can't shift quick enough on the short shift it is already you simply need to hone in on your skills and stop messing with the good oem mitsu parts.

I say get use to it, unless you dislike the extra resistance from the short throw. I personally like the fact that short shifters give the "mechanically" feel.

why are you shifting at 7000? I have never heard anyone say that shifting at the rev limiter was bad...

The redline is 7, and I was told that I should shift around 7. I guess that the evos main power is between 3k and 6k rpms...

depends on your mods. A tuned X will pull all the way past redline. Heck my stock X has plenty of grunt over 6k... not that you go there much, but at the track you should be getting up there.
