Shifter Rattle in Fifth Gear? Anyone Else?

Hey all, I just noticed a light rattle coming from my shifter in my GSR X in fifth gear, between about 2800-3300 rpm's. It's mainly noticeable when accelerating in fifth, and increases in speed as rpm's increase. I can only hear it with the radio off and windows up. If I hold onto the shifter, it gets quieter or goes away...but it's not the nob itself. I've removed the shift knob and the noise is still there. BTW, my car is completely stock (GSR X).

What might cause this? Is there something wrong with my fifth gear? And can someone check out their car for me, and see if their's does the same thing? Thanks!

I have the exact same thing and I know exactly what you are talking about. It's just a vibration in the shifter cage assembly and I don't know how to stop it. In fifth gear, when the noise pops up try gently pressing the shift lever to the left a little bit and the vibration will temporarily stop. It's strange, I know, but it's the only solution I've found to the problem. It's not hurting anything so I don't really care that much, but it's frustrating because it has been there ever since I bought the car new and I have a short throw shifter and bushings in there now so I know the dealer would just blame it on that and wouldn't help me if I brought it in. I figure I'll take the boot back off and see if I can figure out exactly where in the cage it's coming from. Let me know if you have any luck.

I've noticed this rattle in 5th gear too. I was searching the console to see what the hell it was, never really thinking it would be the shifter. Then I started moving the shifter a little while in 5th and it would temporarily stop. Yet another annoyance from Mitsu.

Wow, what a sigh of relief...the good news is it seems normal...the bad news is it's very annoying! I was just worried something was wrong with my transmission but at least you guys have confirmed that there isn't Thanks!

If anyone finds a solution or cause to this rattle, please let me know!

Easy fix for the Glove Box. Go to home depot or any hardware store get some rubber stop like you use on drawers or cabinet doors at home. Put it one the places of contact. Make sure they are big enough so the glove box closes tight. Glove Box rattle solved.

I have it too. I took it to the dealer and the Mitsu tech line said that they hadn't heard of anything like that and that it was "normal". Uh-huh.

I pulled the console to look for anything that could be adjusted, but the whole assembly is plastic and riveted. I have noticed that if you hit the lever downwards it seems to help, at least for a bit.

I have cable and console bushings and it didn't help at all. Might have even accentuated it a little bit.

Haven't noticed the rattle in mine yet and was out yesterday and today for a long ride on the interstate.
