So where do you place the zip tie to eliminate the shifter rattle? Also, this improves the shift quality? Could it be then that the notchyness is more of a issue with the linkage/shifter cables then the synchros themselves? Please take your console off and take a pic!

My dealership is about an hour away and I doubt their capabilities on fixing the rattle even if I tell them how. Judging from past experience, they will say it's either normal or they can't tell it's happening.

I have something like that but it sounds more like a clicking than a rattle. Think it may be the same thing?

I get a clicking as well. Seems to only be when the car is warmed up. In the mornings on the way to work i don't notice it at all. When i take off for lunch, it's there. Driving me crazy. I think it's coming from the drivers side up on the dash somewhere. HELP!

Well I took it in and told them about that. Tech undid the center console and it was so loud when he drove it. Turns out it was two shifter cables. Mitsu told them to zip tie them together and its fixed. Not a single sound

The shifter is super tough into 1st and 2nd, but the car shifting is alot smoother. Just an FYI incase its driving anyone else nuts.
Did you get the rattle after installing aftermarket shifter bushings?

I just installed the AMS shifter bushings and I'm getting the same rattle as you describe. I drove the car with the center console off and yup its those two shifter cable/linkages in the center console.

I ziptied them as you describe that they did but that seems like a hokey ghetto fix. Why are they rattling in the first place? They didn't rattle before. And why can't Mitsu have a real fix for them?

I'm really frustrated right now ... the way I have them zip tied the sound is gone for most rpms ... but when I really get on the gas its still audible.

Gonna call AMS tomorrow hopefully they have some info/help.

I have the same rattle and I have not installed any aftermarket shifter bushings. Like the original poster says it stops if you grab the gearshift knob. I'm taking mine to dealer next week to get my winter tire sensors calibrated I may as well have this done too. Thanks for the fix!

I might have that rattle. It does seem like it's coming from the climate controls area.

I also have the glove box rattle, and some rattle that sounds like it is coming from the passenger seat belt area.

It's funny, I'm driving on the highway and I hear all these rattles and start punching random areas of my car to try stop it. I must look like a maniac to other drives, sitting there hitting random parts of my interior.

I wish the fit and finished of my car was a little better, for the 40k msrp, you would think so. Oh well. I'll live.

Please let me know what they do to "fix" it ... because personally ... the ziptie fix is lame ... there has to be a better solution.

Talked to AMS and they haven't heard/noticed the rattle due to their shifter bushings.
Also seeing as how others on this thread have the rattle without aftermarket bushings its obviously a mitsubishi problem.

I really hope there's a better fix for this than using zip ties. The zip tie fix as the OP has described significantly increases the force required to shift into 1st. Makes it super lame for stop and go traffic.

If anyone gets better info from their dealer or anywhere else please let me know!

I'm hesitant to take car into dealer because they'll probably just blame it on my installed parts (which I would believe if you guys weren't having the same problem).

Not having the same problem.. yet (Currently >5000 Miles+). I did have a strange rattle a few months ago.. Happened when I would let off the gas from 1st gear. I initially thought it was due to some recent work I'd done and was starting to get a bit paranoid. After maybe 50-60 stop and go's I finally had it narrowed down to the rear and had a buddy go back and check... Hahaha... After a face full of exhaust he found that a bolt had somehow made it between the chrome exhaust collar and the actual pipe... No idea how it made it in there, was it me, road debris, dunno.. but I’m especially proud to say I heard it in the 1st place... not to mention eventually being able to find the darn thing. Hahah. Point of the story, look in your exhaust!!! Haha.

I have the 5th gear clicking as well, though I would rather live with it than have any shifter cables zip tied, That might cause more issues down the line.

I just dropped my car off at the dealer for this today. They are ordering new cables to replace the originals. Guess I will find out when they come in if it fixes the problem.
