I don't know if it is the same but in my n/a 5 spd there is a lockout, however if you were to go from 5th to neutral it is no longer locked out and you can put it into reverse... I will add myself to the fearful of this happening list.

Wow, that completely slipped my mind, good call.

There's definitely a lock-out. You'd have to force it pretty hard to get it in there. I've tried to hit 6th in the X a couple times after driving my 6spd Si for awhile and wondered for a second why it wouldn't go in.

Of course, the 5spd is so crunchy anyway, it may have felt like normal resistance so the OP just pushed harder.

well that sucks to hear man... for the gearbox, i dont know how hard you actually threw it into the so called "6th" gear, but i would say, if it is going in to reverse and all the other gears fine then there shouldnt be a problem.

i almost did that too going into a freeway entrance, my old car was a 6 spd, and coming out of fifth i almost put it into reverse until i realize what i was doing.

ANyways hopefully nothing is wrong, maybe have a shop look at it just in case?

good luck and keep us posted.

Only way to find out for sure is to drain that transmission fluid. It's not exactly expensive stuff, either (the fluid, I mean) ..
