I dont know what I was thinking

I havent drove my EVOX for a while. On these last days off of mine. Ive been driving my Viper GTS.. The Viper has a 6 speed gearbox..
Ok, so today I jump in my EVO and drive it. On the freeway Im in 5th gear and and not paying attention, I forgot that my Evo is only a 5 speed. So Im trying to put it in 6th, in reality Im putting it in reverse. I can feel, and hear a eeeeeeeeeew sound, yes thats gear grinding noise. I freak out and say to myself " WTF" are you doing!!

I quickly drive to a parking lot and park my car and put in reverse. To check if I screwed up my reverse gear. Luckily nothing is wrong, and I dont hear any other noises. Seems fine.. So do you guys think I shortened the life on my gearbox? Today was a big wakeup call for me...

The reverse in the X is totally different than previous Evos. My dad did this on my IX and buzzed the hub. From then on out, it grinded reverse unless you put it in second beforehand. Drove me freaking nuts.

I thought it had a lockout? My friend who owns a 6speed car drove my car once and tried puttin it in "6th" and it wouldn't go.

Ouch, that was almost a disaster. I would hope there is some kind of reverse lockout, can anyone confirm this? Not that I need to know, but I'm kind of curious now.

Do you guys think I put some marks on the reverse gears by doing this?

Reverse is a combination of 1st and 3rd gear. There is no dedicated reverse gear, so if you grind reverse i believe your grinding more then one gear.

The dog ring engagers where probably smoo0thing the square edges off via pressure thru the synchros, but the gears themselves are always engaged. If it shifts the same, I'd say you're fine. The GSR 5 spd cruches so much, I'd say it isn't anything it doesn't do to itself normally.

(how hard did you try to push it in?)

Sucks man. If it was fine for you afterwards, I'm sure you'll be fine. If you want, go ahead and change the fluids. Might give you some peace of mind.

I agree with aftershock. I think if it were my car changing the fluids would make me feel better.

its funny how no one else mentioned this. if you think you damaged your "reverse gear" then you most likely damaged first and third as there isnt a reverse gear.

watch the training videos on you will see how it works.

This is interesting, I have never known that reverse was actually just a combo of 1 + 3.

This is news to me as well. I'm glad my MR has the lockout thing I have to lift to get into Reverse. It's funny though because I've had people at Town Fair Tire come get me and say "uh, I'm sorry sir, but I can't get your car in reverse." Then they get all embarrassed when I show them. Then they stall my car. Never fail to laugh when I let other people beat my car up for no good reason.

Actually, its a new setup for the X that allows it to save weight by reusing existing gears and allowing for a beefier build of each of the existing gears. I might be wrong, but I think the IX and older GSR/RS all had a separate Reverse gear.

But to the OP, dude, this has been my worst nightmare since I bought the X and have never even dared to see if there is a lock feature to prevent it from doing that.

I wish the aftermarket would come up with something in those short shifters they already have that would allow us to put it in reverse only if we pull/push the shifter knob like one of the other posters stated.
