Evo X MR - A Rookies Review

Hello all,

Its been almost a week since i picked up my GG Evo X MR. I thought i would share some thoughts on the subject, as reading this forum has provided me with valuable insight that helped me tremendously!

First of all, I am a rookie at this high performance car lark. I had a truck before the Evo X MR, more out of necessity than anything else. I guess this fact is what makes the Evo in my opinion the perfect match for my needs.

I had started researching buying one of theses amazing machines about 2 years ago, but just didnt find the right situation of car and finances to justify the purchase. So i sat and waited, then I saw the Evo X MR and was very intrigued by the new TC-SST transmission and 'higher' level features such as touch screen navi, satelite radio, and the little touches of refinement over previous MR editions.

*DISCLAIMER* I use my X as a DD

Pottering around town i love just leaving it in normal auto mode and even then there's plenty of poke if you need it. But not having to have a clutch, for me personally, is a great thing. I love having the freedom to switch into paddle shifter mode and act like Lewis Hamilton, but again that's a personal thing as well.

Negatives of going from a big truck to a car are probably the obvious ones, not as much space, potholes, and the like. However the driving position change didn't really have as much of an impact as i thought.

As a rookie, and someone that has never driven a manual Evo i couldn't possibly comment which is better, i cannot even imagine an Evo of any kind modified, my X is fast enough for me. That would be something i would love to do is drive a manual modified Evo. But i fear that may become addicting.

I love everything about this car, and really think Mitsubishi did a bang up job, of course it has faults, but my personal opinion is its a fantastic car, very rewarding to drive, technologically great, and for the money i paid it is second to no car!

Feedback/questions appreciated.

Congrats, glad you like it. I too moved up to an Evo, a GSR. I also think the car is fast enough as it is. Being my DD, I just don't see myself pushing it to 450HP like some other members are doing. My problem mainly is that the car is pricey as it is, how can you afford to drop 1-3 grands worth of parts on a new car? that's insane.

I'm adjusting a little to the car, had it for almost a month. Love the performance, but wish it had a couple more features come standard. Maybe eventually I will get the bluetooth interface, maybe the Nav. Leather Recaros would have been nice (these are a pain to clean).

Overall I am very happy with the car, love it. I've taken it to a track and I STILL don't think I've pushed it enough. It never cease to impress performance-wise. Although I think I maybe there's a couple of things wrong with it and it may need a dealer visit.

I just got mine not too long ago too. I am definitely enjoying it. I use it as my daily driver and my track beater.

My last car was a 366whp SRT-4 and it ran high 11's at 116-117mph in the quarter. I became so used to having the power on tap, that after 40k miles with that setup I felt it needed more power.

Having said that, the Evo X was a downgrade in power for me, but a major upgrade in the traction and handling department. I've had it a month and already have some dyno time scheduled to get it tuned. You may not be able to imagine it with more power, but give it some time. Take a ride in a couple modified Evo's and it won't be long until you get the bug to start making upgrades to the performance. That's the great thing about the Evo, and ultimately why I gave up my SRT-4 for it, it is a great performance platform to build upon.

El Stig - we're among the few who buy Evos w/ no (near term) intention of modding it. Like you, my Evo X MR is my DD and I plan to keep it as quiet and reliable as possible.

I am however curious to see what an ECU reflash would do for my car. Having another 40 - 60whp w/ no mods sounds like a winning proposition to me...

Just wanted to say Hi.

I just bought my first Evo X on Tuesday and am very happy with it so far. I got the MR in Red with all the options (last one on the lot to beat the sales tax increase). My first track day is April 17th and will see how it compares to my friend's brand new M3 and my old, heavily modified, TT. Oh and my other friends GT3RS (won't be much competition there I should imagine).
Either way, my initial impressions are very good and am glad to find somewhere I can share my interest with kindred spirits.
The next step is to go to Works at Infineon for some ECU work.

you might wanna look into getting it tuned...not just for the power, but for the driveability.

Am looking at tuning options right now. Will go for Flash work and a rolling road session to make sure I'm getting the most out of the ECU. Not sure what else to do at this point but will probably add an air filter in there as well while I'm there. Will mod further as time goes on but it seems like ECU/Filter/Tune is a good place to start.

I too feel as though the car is factory fast and needs no mods , The only mod I've committed to was a new pair of shoes for the summer and keep the stockers for the winter time! Glad you like your car, best of luck...

Cool Car - I got my X MR about two weeks ago. 450 miles. Love the transmission. I had a silver IX SE and it was fun but sucked a** for my 150 mile commute once a week to NY. This car is on a different level in terms of being comfortable as a DD. Also have the tech package which is pretty cool. 0% helped too!

I am writing because today I have a "clunking" sound coming from what sounds like the passenger side rear around the wheel. I didnt hit anything. Nothing loose in the trunk or loose feeling from what I could feel except the plastic around the battery box. I stopped by a local mitsu dealer and took a tech for a ride. He acknowledged the sound but was booked and couldnt get the car on a lift. He said it sounds like metal on metal but didnt think it was anything critical. Ill go to the dealer where I bought it tomorrow. Its not constant - but is annoying as hell.

Im too **** about strange noises and thats the only thing I hate about fun cars. I heard a strange "squeal" on my IX which was very faint...first tech said it was nothing, next tech replaced my timing belt and pulley(s)! I sold the car soon after and had a Civic SI that required nothing but an oil change every 5-7k miles. It was slow but had a slight fun factor. But its tough to live with another car once you drive an EVO...
Hopefully its something stupid - anyone know of similar issue?
