Turbo Noise and Fluttering/Wind Noises
Turbo Noise and Fluttering/Wind Noises
Noise #1
I've had my Evo X for about 2 months now and since about 600 miles I've noticed a whirring sound under the hood that for a while i thought was the crankcase. It occurs when the engine is cold and the noise raises and lowers with the throttle. So for a long time I was hoping it wasn't the turbo, but now I am pretty sure that it is. It sounds somewhat similar to how a failed turbo on my previous vehicle sounded. Once the car warms up and I assume the turbo warms up and is oiled, the noise goes away. I was under the assumption that you can't really hear the turbo with a stock setup, which is what I currently have other than an AcessPort stage 1 map. Does anyone else have this noise when they start up a cold Evo?
Noise #2
Today I have noticed that I have what almost sounds like a gush of wind coming through my engine bay. I can hear it on part-throttle noticeably in any gear. I am not sure if this is the fluttering sound others have, I don't notice it as much under full throttle. It almost seems as if it is a boost leak. My AP was showing an absolute pressure of 28psi, and I have a barometric pressure of 12.3 here in Utah. So does this not translate to 16psi gauge pressure? The Boost Pressure as measured on the AP never goes above 5.8, what is this supposed to read? I am also noticing that smell that you get when you push your Evo hard, the one u smelled a lot during break-in. I don't know if that is exhaust or burning oil or what. I am noticing it quite a bit mroe now since this new noise I have gotten today. I did do a tiny bit of hard driving a day or two ago, and did some hard cornering as well. I used to get that smell after hard driving, but now I get it after easy driving.
So everyone/anyone who has had their Evo X or other Evo's help me out here. What do you think about the noises? Does anyone else have these noises or the smell consistently? What about eh boost levels I am reading on my AP? Are they normal? I would pop the hood and check for some loose fittings, by my damn hood latch broke today! grrr...
Danke!

The wind noise I have experienced and still do, however it sounds like back pressure to me... The heavily vented aluminum hood has a lot to do with that. Also the smell reoccurs on a regular basis with mine as well, I use to think it was brake, then clutch or even oil... However, my brakes don't fade, my clutch grabs great and my oil is never low!
Our cars are heavily undercoated, between the engine/transmission heat and the under-spray Mitsubishi used odors could occur. The engine may always produce this oder, much like a vtec, whatever the case, many things could be at play... Although, never once have I ran into any other issues than the smell, until we have further evidence that this issue leads to something catastrophic, I wouldn't worry too much!

Could you try to record a video of your car while it is making these noises? its just reallly hard to tell without actually hearing it. And as for the smell it could really be anything. Burnt clutch, brakes, rubber etc. Is it a sweet smell? Sour? haha its just so hard to diagnose as all youve said is that its the smell you get when you drive your car hard. Are you sure the smell isnt coming from your pants?
My X has 800 miles, and I too have that whirring noise. Sometimes it seems more pronounced than other times. I'm not sure if this normal or not either. It kinda sounds like its howling. I bought the car with 100 miles of test drives so I hope it's okay.
This atleast isn't a very isolated issue as there is a few of us with these issues, hopefully this leads to some results or explanations. I as well have this burning smell that when I park makes me do a walk around sniff that makes me wonder cat? brakes?
. This whirring sort of fluttering noise I get as well, it wasn't there at first but now it's there after the car is really
warmed up. I am going to take my car in Monday and will post here if I get anywhere, as well if someone gets any information about these issues please let me know, would be greatly appreciated

Honostly I think you guys are paranoid. The whirring sound is probably the air going thru the piping and being pushed by the turbo and then the sounds of the recirculating valve. My car makes those sounds and so do the other 2 X's my friends have.
The smell is most likely the tires. These tires wear out quickly and are a pretty soft compound, if driven hard they will smell a little.
I could be wrong and you guy's could be having different issues, but it sounds normal to me???

The only noise I hear (other than the normal engine/turbo/exhaust noises) is gear/drivetrain whine which increases & decreases in pitch depending on speed. The only other issues I have experienced when first starting out after a cold morning is that 2nd gear is a little tough to shift into, and my tires are flat-spotted for the first 5 miles or so. Other than that, I'm quite pleased on how quiet & tight this type of car is...no suspension or interior squeeks as of yet. If I wanted to be completely isolated from the outside world, I would have bought a different car.

The sound of rushing air is most likely just normal intake noise. After installing my HKS drop-in air filter, my intake noise got even louder. Just recently we had a couple warm days here in Mass...warm enough to drive with the windows down, and I couldn't believe just how loud now the intake noise really is. Not that I'm complaining or anything, but it is noticable...even with the stock airbox still in place.
As for the smell, I drove my new Evo GSR off the lot end of January, and I too have noticed an increase in "smells" as the days warm up. Again nothing bad, and I'm sure the "smells" will diminish in time.
I think the smells will continue for years to come, I truly believe it's a characteristic of the vehicle! I don't receive the smell all the time but when I dive deep into "twin scroll turbo spooldom" the car starts to omit odors, however I only smell the odor when I get out of the car!
Well I believe I have figured out what the "wind" noise is, I have a boost leak. I didn't notice before that I lost power but now I notice it big time. I press down on the pedal and it pulls barely then just falls flat at like 4k to redline. This is why I believe I am getting that smell much more than before, it must be the air in the charge pipes leaking into the engine bay and being sucked into the cabin. I did a hard 360 in my Evo the day before I noticed it and I believe that it pulled something loose. Too bad that I can't open my hood cause my hood latch broke yesterday! I am making full boost, but it takes longer to get there. I did some datalogs that I am goign to look at today on my AP.
As for the whine noise, if it isn't the turbo then it must be the transfer case. I can hear most of the time very faintly what I believe is the turbo, that really high pitched whistle in the background that gets louder or quieter. That is what a properly working turbo should sound like. The other noise I thought was probably the turbo(and still may be) I am hoping is something else. It always goes away after it warms up, and is usually only there after an overnight rest.
Anyway, I'm going to take it into the dealer this week and I will report back what I find.
