It always sounds to me like something is pressurized and it's making noise because of expansion or some ish. It's definitely a sound that comes from the rear end and I'm really curious to know if my es is having the same problem as your evos, does it happen in other mitsu cars too?

Another weird problem with my car since we're on the topic and I'm curious if any of you have had it now is after I turn my car off, if I sit in it for a few minutes afterwards, I can hear the brakes up front moving. Now I assume this is probably just pressure being released off of the caliper pistons, but it never made these noises before... Is this something any of you have experienced or is does it sound like there is air in my braking system?

I know the one your talking about when you turn the ignition on, that's the same one I have and I have a more audible one when I actually start the car. And by the noise of it, my gas is it's in the gas tank. I'm not mech or anything like that, but just the way the sound is and the fact it does it when you just turn the ignition on. I'm thinking it's has something to do with the fuel and being pushed into the lines or something of that nature.

The 2nd one you have I don't have any issues with. But I also just upgraded my clutch. Take it into the dealership and let them hear it maybe they will have a better diagnose of that noise. I doubt the clutch is going, but if it is hopefully you still have a warranty on it. I voided mine with the aftermarket parts I put on and the ECU tune.

Come Monday I'll call the mech that worked on mine to put the clutch in and call down to AMS to see if they know anything about that kind of noise. But I don't think that it hurts the car any because mine is still driving fine and still puts down all 320 whp and 323 lbs of torque in a snap.

I get mild clunking in my GSR, but only really when shifting badly between the lower gears shortly after turning it on and not warming it up much. The clunking goes away as the car warms and gets a mile or two.

The only other time I get clunking is when I stall... and that's one large clunk, followed immediately by feelings of inadequacy.

The MR's have a significant amount of "clunking" just after engine start - it's something like the clutches learning their pre-feel position and partially engaging the SST input shafts.

Also, there is a "rattle" sound that occurs at idle, especially with the car in neutral or park.

If it's a GSR...???

All in all, the Evo (as in the past models) has a pretty unstable idle with some popping and whatnot as others have mentioned.

If you get any more info, make sure you let us know what you find!

I have an SST and experience the same noise after start up. Totally disappears after a minute.

that large clunk you hear is your tranny, be very careful not to stall so as not to damage your tranny prematurely.

Dude, that's like a "thud" and is not similar to what my car produces. Mine's a little high pitched. Or maybe the microphone converted the tone from high to low? But yeah, I kinda just ignore the damn sound.

I also realized that there's another sound coming from the engine bay when I start moving. It sounds like a belt snapping/stretching out.

Everyone seems to have overlooked the fact that the factory injectors are known to have an audible "ticking" at idle.

Yeah that one I hear. Sounds like a dead battery at first.
