1st to 2nd on wot

Hey guys this is my first manual car, so sorry for the noob post. So i tried taking off on the evo and i was just wondering the gear change from 1st to 2nd on wot feels like the engine is going to lunge out of the engine bay, it's kinda violent. IDK if that's normal or i'm doing something wrong, every shift from 3rd to 5th are not as violent. Pls advice?

PS. I'm not powershifting.

correct me if im wrong fellas, but this basically caused by the way the power is transferred and the way your are shifting. i know when i first bought my evo 9 i was like what the heck as well, especially from first to second gear. after i got the shifting down pat it rarely happened again. hope that kinda helps without getting all technical.

you need to be smoother on your gear changes. when you left off the gas all that forward momentum gets shot back and thats what you feel

+1 I agree with everyone else on here, I posted the same thing a while ago and now I do not have any problems at all with the way that I shift and the noises that come from it. It will just take some ime being in the car then it will go away. here is my thread about it: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...nd-coming.html

P.s what you are getting is called driveline shock more than likely

Its not the car. 1st to 2nd can be like that because in the low gears the car has more throttle response and as mentioned above weight transfer, so if you dont engage the throttle as you disengage the clutch right it lurches around. You won't notice it as much after 2nd. Just practice.

Had this happen to me as well, I've gotten better but there's no getting around it sometimes! The quicker and the smoother you release the better it is, always tap the gas just a little before fully releasing the clutch, seemed to always make the transition a little smoother! My friends 04 STi does this as well.

Yeah the Evo X does it bad. None of my other cars ever did this. If you press the clutch down just barely enough to engage the gears (not all the way down) then this problem is basically nullified. Try pressing the clutch down an inch or two instead of to the floor and see if it helps. Release it gently also.

Yeah, but you gotta do it just right, otherwise you end up with the grinding problem because you did not depress it enough at times. Releasing the clutch slowly would help the most. But since the OP says he's "Taking Off", I guess that's not an option.

You held down the clutch way too long, the rpm drops to idle, then you engage the next gear and the rotating drivetrain forces the engine back to 5000rpm or watever it should be at that speed. You may want to avoid this as it will shock the entire powertrain, especially on the engine and tranny.

I agree with 4Trouble. I think your timing is off. Every car is a little different with the clutch step off point and how much throttle you can give etc. Be a little easier on the clutch and you don't have to shift the car like you are trying to teach it a lesson. Smooth is fast!
