When I put coils on my car, I remember seeing that weird cut in the exact same place under the seat. I never thought anything of it, or looked at the foam itself but now im very curious. Probably going to check this out over the weekend. Oh and BTW my car makes some seriously funky smells with the heat on at a stop.

Checked mine about a week ago. Same issue. Never thought anything about it. I will just leave it alone or intill Mitsubishi comes out with a TSB. If it catches on fire I'll just buy a new car with my insurance money

replacing my battery tonight i notice that our stock battery has a little hose connected to evacuate toxic gases. where is that hose going to? I notice it goes down inside the trunk floor,, but I don't know if somehow those gases could be the cause of the melting/burning foam

I have seen the same thing happen when at track days. The cap for the fuel tank melts of and the goo slides all over. I have had to ducttape the metal door and it still does the same thing. It burned a piece of the foam seat as well.

There are no proved facts yet that high temperature is creating the problem, there is also a chemical reaction theory that could also be the cause of the melting foam.

Even if some folks here said you don't need to do it, this is what I’m doing until some scientist came with the final solution:

1. Wrap your rear end exhaust (not the muffler but the 3" pipe that ends in the muffler) that area in any case is the "critical" possible area transmitting the heat.

2. Heat shield the underneath area of your rear seats. Pep boys sells really cheap fiberglass carpet with one side covered in aluminum foil. It works for me.

I've had my single exit Ti-C for about 2 months now and haven't had a single instance yet.

I'm still a bit worried though. Can someone describe to me how to take out the back seats? I want to check it out and make sure there aren't any burn marks or anything.

Get your hand underneath it, push hard toward the back and yank upward. There's a clip on each side that holds the bottom of the rear seat in.

Well even in my VIII, i noticed a hot spot in the trunk right above the muffler after i have been driving. Not sure i want to pick it up to see what awaits underneath.

Thanks for a quick response. Sounds easy enough.

Couldn't possibly be caused by burnt wires or anything of that sort? That's my only guess bc I wouldn't think the exhaust pipe would heat the car enuff to start a small fire just from heat and heat alone.
