Mysterious rear seat burning?
I don't know about burnt wires, but the talk about having some tube coming out of the battery compartment to let out toxic gas makes me nervous.
I've checked for warm spots on the back seats after hard 15min+ runs and it's never gotten warm to the touch so I'm kind of ruling out my single exit exhaust.
Hopefully it's not some crazy problem that'll result in a tragedy like some guy I heard about whose evo caught on fire in his garage and burnt the house down... my evo's garage kept...

The thread talks about it in more depth but its nearly impossible to be the exhaust. The heat would have to travel directly through the gas tank to hit the spot that is "burning". If you get the car up on jacks, try touching where the spot is from underneath . . . . . its directly above the gas tank. Highly doubt its the exhaust. I think more are assuming its some chemical reaction of some sort.

Don't be afraid of that vent tube. This is actually a much safer battery than normal batteries, because it is designed to be in the trunk, or closer to the passenger compartment than a regular battery.
I hope this helps set your mind at ease.
ok after several days of looking the car with a mitsutech he found that the smell that comes from the back of my car is not under seat.
it has to do with the battery and a small tube that comes out of it,this tube goes through the car and goes under the car its position on top of the exhaust so when we looked at the stock exhaust it has some white spots on it and he says thats the acid coming from the battery so when this acid hits the exhaust it produces the wierd smell and it get inside the cabin via the vents on the trunk.
so we will see how we re-route the tube so the acid doesnt fall on the exhaust.

just thought to add that i have a 2009 lancer gts with a greddy se and i too have some burning in the same e3xact spot about 25% less than shown in photos on this thread. i never noticed it with my stock exhaust,
oh and i should also add i have the evo x interior (rear seat and recaros) so my evo x rear seat bottom portion has burn marks on them too.
ill have to go into the attic and check my original back seat to see if it has any burn marks.

I have a 08 GSR I bought new and only has 1400 miles. I just checked before installing my ams single exhaust last weekend and mine has the same mark but it's not as bad. It seems on mine the tar melted a little and transfered to the seat, the foam didn't melt just yet. I just covered the tar area with dei titanium exhaust wrap strips I had left over. So far after a few hundred miles it has not gotten any worse. I'm just glad I saw this thread before it gets any worse
I pulled out my rear seat the other day and I too had a small singed spot on the passenger side (maybe 2" by 2"). I run an RRE dual exhaust. Never noticed a burning smell so it probably happened slowly over time. As a band-aid fix, I glued some aluminum foil where the burned area was before reinstalling.
As i said, don't seat any friend/family in your rear pasenger seats until you heat shield it, whatever is causing the problem the more weight you put on it the deeper will be the burn.
damn my wife noticed a burning smell 2 days ago and i also thought it was from another car in front of me.... i have to check this tomorrow.... any updates on this? i have a custom greddy tic also... i might just end up trading the evo for something else..
we noticed long time ago, i don't know not even one story of an evo x on fire because this issue.
there is a lot of theories about why the rear seats foam get toasted, but non definitely answer. just get some cheap insulation and you will be fine. a 20$ DIY fiberglass 2'x2' will be fine, you don't need to install Dynamat at Street Customs L.A.
I remember that was last summer when i noticed, here in miami temperature rise inside your car to 112 degrees, and we have no fires, so you will be fine, i also run a full open straight exhaust, one pipe.
keep your evo

It might be time to take this a little more seriously.
