may be making a deal on a 09 gsr - dealer installed aem intake and hks catback
Hi all,
I'm considering making a deal on an '09 gsr. The dealer has put a hks cat back on it and also an aem intake.
The car, while new, has 660km's on it. So assuming I can get to a price that I think is reasonable (right now they are asking way too much), I have some questions (maybe concerns) about these mods and the mileage.
first, the intake: I've read intakes really aren't required for evo until you are making big hp numbers. True? Is there any harm in having one on a relatively stock evo? Do they actually make any power without a tune? I think aem says something like 17hp.
The exhaust - with this being a cat back only, are there an hp gains? Does anyone have this exhaust? Is it a decent quality exhaust? What does it sound like? Is it very loud compared to stock? I'm concerned about a possible drone at highway cruising speed.
Is it an issue driving the car modded like this without a tune? As far as I know, the parts have been on for most of its 660km.
The dealer that has the car is in a city about 3 hours away from me (apparently it is the last '09 gsr around). they are obviously a mod friendly dealer, I am not so sure if my 2 local dealers are (I will phone and find out). Are these mods enough to cause me grief on warranty work?
Obvioulsy I don't know how this car has been driven for the 660km. thoughts on this - is it a concern if break-in wasn't done as suggested by the manual (i assume the manual talks break in procedure)? I've read here where some have basically said screw the break and drive hard from day one.
Well, that is it for now. Thoughts and opinions are appreciated.
Thanks.

I can't comment on everything else, but in regards to break-in, I believe that all of the Evos come already broken in, so I don't think you need to worry about it too much. The extra break-in procedure found in the manual is just for reassurance that all components settle in properly.
You will get power gains by adding an intake on the stock tune...the stock tune is very rich and the intake leans it out. Intakes generally invalidate your drivetrain warranty so I wouldn't take this car to any dealer other than the one that installed this.
Cat back exhausts are more for sound quality than power...most of the power is to be had in a test pipe and down pipe. Any exhaust that has a stock cat isn't going to be loud enough to be a problem, imo.
If you actually want a stock exhaust then I'm sure you could find one dirt cheap. The hanger design on the X makes it easy to swap the CBE, too...just had mine out last weekend to install a swaybar.

I'd treat this as a used car. I'd only buy at or below used car price. You cant mod a car and drive 700KM and call it a new car. Only shady POS dealerships try to pull this kind of crap. Just because no paperwork has been filed and there hasn't been an official owner doesn't mean this isn't a "USED" car.

I know it's 3 hours, but if you're in that area, it might be helpful for your purchasing decision to test drive this modded GSR. But, then again, the 2010's are hitting the market and are already at 0% with prices reduced from msrp, by thousands. Be patient and wait for those deals to get even better.
