Damn I have a good memory. One of the moderators posted a quick blurb about it in a thread he did on the evo x forums back in the summer time at an MMNA event he attended.

Well there it is, that wonderful color LCD screen everyone's so hyped about! Now for the sake of the forums, I did ask the if we will we be able to switch the color displays out with our red and black ones. Possible, yes. Expensive and very tough to do? Yes, very. Long story short, what would need to happen is the old screen be sent with the new screen to a place out in detroit so that they can set the odometer legally and correctly, then send it back to you for installation.

I've had an instrument cluster replaced by a dealership before (not in my Evo) and when they ordered the cluster, they ordered it with the mileage on the car at that time. It took about 2 weeks for the cluster to come in. I had put about 700 miles on the car in that time. So, basically, I got 700 miles back. No special sticker, no odometer disclosure. The dealer did their best to match the mileage, and it was very close. I would think Mitsu dealers could do this. I mean, it's not like they don't have some procedure in place for replacing a failed instrument cluster...

I'm more of a meat and potatoes guy... engine work, tune, tires and suspension...updating the little lcd dislay to be color for a thousand bucks?...fuggetaboutit...
It won't do anything for your car, it costs a lot, and, if anything, lowers the correctness of your car if you are the type to keep fairly stock and collectable...maybe 15 years from now somebody will care (of course Mitsubishis don't usually run that long, but I digress...)

the new cluster is great and much more useful, that is true...but i wouldn't go beyond DIY.

Depending on the state, replacement of the odometer might require the permanent fixture of a sticker to the driver's side door jamb to that effect. In the event that the odometer cannot be set to the accurate mileage, the odometer will be set to zero, and the sticker will note a) who performed the work, b) the date that the odometer was replaced, and c) the mileage on the prior odometer when the replacement was performed.
If such a sticker is required to be placed on the vehicle, it is an act of fraud to remove it.
