Smile Installing the JDM Crash Beam to mount a tow hook?

Hi,

I posted a thread earlier asking about tow hook solutions:

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...-hook-yet.html

And it seems there still isn't a solution for USDM cars. So, I think I might try to install the JDM crash beam to get the mount. It doesn't seem too expensive (~$180):

http://www.japanparts.com/db/parts_d...Y=&SEARCH_page=

But after contacting another member here, he told me that there are some other accessories that are needed, though could possibly be included in japanparts' "kit" above.

So, before I rush into this, has anyone here completed the swap? How was the installation? Which parts do we need to purchase?

So appreciate it!

it does weigh a little less. but the main reason you would do this swap is for tracking your car, since most organizations require tow hooks for the track. and your usdm car, despite having a hole in the plastic cover, does not actally have a mount underneath. jdm cars do.

wouldn't it be cheaper just to weld a bolt on there?

and btw, shipping on that thing might cost more than the thing itself

The US part number is 6400B096.
The JDM is 6400B095.

A german site (google it, .at domain) lists it at 77E. That's pretty cheap, but shipping might be killer.

USDM Support:

I'm not seeing much difference in attachment other than the foam pieces.

What's funny to note is that the PNC is the same for both, but depending on your market you use in ASA it pulls up a different part number.

wow, thanks so much for this! the pictures are really helpful!

what do you think of part 62078? numbers are same for both usdm and jdm, but then again the numbers are the same for the crash beam too. i'm thinking if the jdm beam is thinner, it's possible this part would be longer or something to compensate. ???

i think i see why they do not have the tow hook support on the usdm version. seems like the usdm version might be too thick, and having that welded piece might come too close to the bumper cover. dunno... maybe i guess.

otherwise, based on the pictures, there doesn't seem to be anything from the car that would use this beam as support, and the attachment to the frame looks about the same. might just work.

Don't forget that the Intercooler hanger mounts are attached to this, and they also serve for the bolt points for the "nose" of our cars.

Oh, and in the pictures, part 62078 is different. Look at the mounting holes in reference to the "flute" section of the part.
USDM is next to it / strait out
JDM is about mid way down.

I would just make a insert from aluminum rod... tap and drill it for the spec of tow hook, then drill a hole in the crash been and weld in the insert and reinforce it. I think it would be cheaper and easier.

You *might* be able to drill through the crash beam all the way then use a tow hook with a washer/nut on the other end. Not sure how strong that would be though.

I think for the purposes of towing you out of a gravel trap it should be ok, hopefully nobody is planning on doing tractor pulls or something!

Sigh...... I did some more research on this crash beam business, and I decided to go with fabrication instead. Sorry guys. I know... the crash beam swap would have been much sweeter. Just too many variables, and I wasn't quite sure if it would work. Probably would, but it would take a while, and I wanted to hit the track soon. Anyway, ended up buying this from another forum member:

http://www.928motorsports.com/parts/...g_tow_hook.php

The guy included some extra hardware that was purchased seperately to be installed on the Evo. But then I changed my mind. So, if anyone wants, I'll sell it to you. RRE already installed the same setup he uses on his car, and he is entered in sanctioned events--sorry I forgot which ones he told me. So, you know this setup will work.

Anyway, I'm going to have Road Race Engineering (RRE) install this:

You need the receiver:
http://www.rennline.com/Rennline-Uni...oductinfo/E82/

and the hook:
http://www.rennline.com/Folding-Race...ctinfo/E13.09/

I'll probably end up powder coating the hook black. I'll post pics after it's all done.

with the crash beam being the same for both jdm and usdm, wouldnt there be a hole for the tow hook under the 62025B piece?
