Long crank and no start

Hi,

It hapenned a couple of times that my car didn't start. Hot or cold outside, my engine would crank but not start at all. I'd have to wait a couple of minutes and would start up normaly afterwards. I read about the fuel pump relay (which I didn't check yet) but I don't think it will solve this issue. I'm afraid i I take it to the dealership it will only be a waster of their and my time.

Any ideas?

I've had my X a week and the first thing I noticed is it not turning over once in awhile... I'm going to try the fuel relay as well and hope that helps, its got me spooked.

Happens to me too. It's happened twice to me twice so far in the 7 months that i've had my '08 X. Figured it was normal, considering the relatively shoddy build quality of Mitsubishis.

Someone suggested for the RA's at least, which have a similar motor, to turn the car to the full on position w/o cranking and letting it sit there for a couple of seconds to build up some fuel pressure then crank.

I've been doing this all winter, no problems so far, even with the car sitting at near 0 degree temps for 3 days in a ski resort parking lot.

I dont know if it's related or not, but some of the regular 08+ lancers suffer from this as well(mine included). When I went to the dealer for the airbag TSB I asked them... the service manager said there was a ecu update flash available to fix the problem, and they went ahead and did it.

This is what he said, I'm not sure if its 100% true:
Apparently there was a bad parameter in the ECU in some cases when trying to start the car, the throttle body wouldn't open wide enough, and the necessary amount of airflow wouldn't get through to allow a start. So it would sit and crank over and over... then a few mins later would start with no problem... just as you described.

However I am aware of the fuel relay problem, and other flashes that were put out for the 08+ X's that addressed different problems with the car so I'm not sure if they're both related, or maybe even the lancers have a fuel relay issue... although since they applied this flash to my car, it hasn't had the starting issue again.

I'll find my service report and see if I can dig up some official info about the flash from mitsu tomorrow.

I've had my '10 for about 1 1/2 months and I've had this happen twice. It cranks for like 5 seconds before it struggles to turn on. I haven't worried much about it because it's probably related somehow to the extreme colld. The two times it did happen were on days where the temperature was 5-10 degrees.

Last time it happened was 46F outside. But it also happened 3 weeks prior to that at -8F. This week we had 4 days around -10F and started well everyday. I'll ask the dealer to check it at my next service appointment.

BTW, haven't read what anyone's posted, but it could also be something with the Fuel. Winter fuel has a different mixture which sometimes can effect these engines from what I've experienced.

This happened to me las Sunday. You weren't happened to be parked on an incline with less than half a tank of gas? Apparently our fuel pump or something doesn't get gas to the engine very well or something. If you keep pumping the gas while you are trying to start it, it should start. That is, if it's the same issue as mine.

happened a few times already on my 2010 mr-t. Usually 30+ celcius outside, when i notice, yes always in my driveway on an incline and always less then half a tank.

Might be related.
