Well, I have been resarching like crazy on my next car and found the evo X at the top of my list. I orginally wanted a new camaro but an SS is not in my budget and doesnt make sense as a daily driver, long commute and have Ohio winters to deal with. So i guess that leads me to my question. Does an evo X make sense for a long commute daily driver? I drive 50+ miles one way to work, but its 99% highway. Im seeing with some tunes getting 24+mpg highway? I plan on being stock maybe intake or exhast but thats it. I would want to be able get to 100k miles on the car. Anyone commute daily? I am also looking at used mr's, for 6th gear. So am I crazy? Is the X a good choice for this?
No.
There are many, many, many more cars out there that make more sense for a 100-mile-a-day-highway commute.
That being said, knowing nothing about your financial state, how much you envision spending on gas, you total gross income, your desire for a single car, or, well, anything, I'd suggest doing this:
Buy the Evo X, as it's super duper awesome, and buy a Civic, since they suck but get good gas mileage.
Drive the Civic to work, drive the Evo to play.
But, again, that's knowing nothing about you. I think you realize how **** poor the gas mileage is, heh.
As for the "100k miles" thing, sure, it's doable. But again, there exist many more cars where the chance of lasting 100k miles fairly trouble free is higher.

evo x is not a good commuter stock. period. there is no doubt that the gas guzzler will scare you when you drive it untuned. Even it's tuned you are only getting extra like 2-3 mpg.. I commute in this car in relatively short distances (15 miles or less each way ), but if you are driving like 50+ miles a day your wallet will cry....and it's premium only.
Fairly stock almost any car should be able to breeze by 100k miles. Except for the all-wheel drive part, you didn't mention fun to drive or fast so I don't see much need for an evo. BUT, it is a top notch car in it price range that with a tune and a sensible right foot should yield decent gas mileage and be more practical than that Camaro you mentioned. As this is my third evo, I have been very happy with all of them.
YES the evo will be fine/perfect for a 100 miles a day commute, obviously it seems like you have a ecent job since your choices are an SS or an Evo, so both cars are gass guzzlers but the evo not as much though. THere is a lot of guys on this forum that dd their evos with no problems. The car was built with intention to be driven on daily basis "not raced only", so if you can afford the gas i say go for it because the fwy ride will be smooth and the car has more room than an SS...good luck

I agree you could buy a evo, and a beater, and drive the beater to work. I carpool but sometimes drive my car to work when the other drivers cant. i drive 75miles to work then 75 to home... 150 miles a day, drive is comfortable, and fun. However its hard to make the 150miles last a half tank unless Cruise control at 70mph the whole ride.
If you're doing over 100 miles per day commuting I would invest in a different mode of transport. You will find yourself refueling the car 2-3 times per week at $35-$40 each time. There is more than one way to skin a cat. Also, in reference to changing the gear ratio...ignore that.
I daily drive my Evo 8, and I can say it's not too bad simply because I love the car. My commute is about 20 miles each way, 40 round trip. Sometimes with class thrown in and an extra 20 miles. You can live with it, but I'm sure it might put a strain on your wallet at some point.
50 miles is pushing it in my opinion. And as for going with an Evo X, I dunno exactly but my Evo 8 has almost 100K miles on it and is a daily driver. Not a problem.

If you have been "researching like crazy", you'd know that the Evo X is rated at 16/22 and has a 14.5 gallon fuel tank, which means that you're going to be filling up on gas once every two and a half days. It doesn't seem like that big of a deal, but you'll start to hate yourself after a couple weeks of it. The additional tune won't help that much either.
We get too many questions like this from too many people like you. Evaluate your priorities. What you are seriously looking to do with this car? Would you buy a Chevy Suburban for long distance daily commuting? No. And you wouldn't buy an Evo for it either.
Mitsubishi doesn't exactly make the most reliable cars, and you'd be hard pressed to find too many any Evos on the road now that have been driven past 100k miles. You can do much better for much cheaper. I suggest you look into something more sensible, like a Civic Hybrid or a Prius, and get a used VIII or IX on the side.

Thanks for the input. I like the idea of a high performing car that can be driven year round. Like alot of you, I question the cost. I'm ok with paying a little extra in gas if it means I get to enjoy and love the car I drive. My biggest concern is maintance and how well the car will hold up over time. Right now I am driving a 03 trailer blazer to work and at 17 mpg anything is an improvement lol.
+1 to what most people are saying.. You're really gonna wish you had a 6th or longer gears at least - Some people have learned to sacrifice because what they WANTED was an evo - but what you WANT is a commuter car that is sporty or w/e - I dunno what a X does at 75-80mph, Im assuming similar to a 8 or 9 but this is what a Camaro does - http://blogs.insideline.com/roadtest...at-80-mph.html
Someone said GTI, which is a very good choice
