Broke it in on the drive from LA (7 miles) to Chicago (2100 miles).

I'm now at 3K and gonna get it tuned for TBE, intake, UICP, LICP, FMIC, port'n'polished and ceramic coated stock turbo, ported and ceramic coated exhaust manifold on E85

Technically if you're running synthetic engine oil, you don't really need to break it in since the synthetic already reduces the friction in the engine more than a regular engine oil.

My break in was only 1500kms, but I have a friend who ripped it right off the bat, and no problems. The only thing I suggest is to check engine oil frequently. The OEM Mobil1 is crap. Mine was pitch black after 800km, so I switched to Motul.

Cheers!

I went easy on mine until after the first oil change. I still never drive it hard though. I try to take it easy, only opening it up once in a while for some fun. It will last longer that way and save you on wear and tear costs. (tires, clutch, brakes, etc.)

Not a GSR, an MR, but I was WOT to the redline in short bursts from the day I picked it up with only 15mi on odometer! Changed motor oil (Mobile 1 0-30) at 300mi, 2,000mi, 5,000mi, and 8,000mi, changed SST fluid at 8,000mi and I'll be changing the motor oil, TC oil and Differential oil tomorrow at almost 11,000mi on the car. This is the first car I did not break in by the book, kind of as an experiment on the validity of a controversial subject (factory recommended break-in). So far, so good! The car does not use oil, plugs, compression, and leak down are as good as could be, and the car runs strong (see my sig.) and it seemingly loves the abuse!

^ Weren't you in the process of a huge MR build with SSP goodies? what happened, realize the GSR is a lot easier/possibly better for going fast?

I think I did a tune and mods after 3000 or so.

1500-2000 miles should be plenty. A tune isn't a bad thing at all regardless, it is more your driving habits.

There are mixed theories on engine break in too. Some say to drive it like you stole it to make sure the internals break in correctly and everything seats properly and others say to baby it. Ask you local shop for instructions is my vote.

i'm still breaking mine in after 26k miles. think i can rip on it now?

just do what the manual says which is no launching or major wot past 5500 rpms for the first 600 miles and take it easy on the tires and brakes for first 300 miles. the second part i wouldn't follow too hard. you need to mate the rotors and pads and you need to scrub in your tires.....just don't drive on the highway for 600 miles. go hit some winding backroads.

wow this was a long post on this subject.....it will all be a distant memory.
