Driveability question..
Driveability question..
Let me preface this by saying I'm very new to the Evo world, just got my '08 GSR last night as a matter of fact. Anyways, what I've noticed the few times i've given the 4B a squeeze of throttle is that I get a nice healty torque rush from about 3200rpm through about 5500, however from 5500 and up there is a very notable drop in acceleration/torque, rather precipitous. Now I know I've read of a rather large drop in manifold pressureafter 'spike' numbers when the turbo reaches complete spool up, but is it supposed to be this noticable would be my question?
Thanks in advance.. I'm loving this car!!

It's noticeable like that on the stock tune, especially if you haven't had any flash updates from the dealer. I didn't have any updates either, but decided to go with the AP flash instead of trying Mitsu. Pulls hard now way past 5500rpms with alot more power everywhere. Basically, it needs a better tune.
ya the accessport will take care of it, depending on what you plan to do to your car, the accessport can be good or bad.
Persoanlly i have the accessport and i love it. I bought it becasue it is the only tool that can flash your ecu and then if you need to unflash it and the dealer cant tell. On all the other flash program the dealer will know you flashed and void your warrenty. If you dont plan on doing any other mods then it is the way to go. If you plans to do other mods, save your money and get a flash with the other programs as it is much cheaper

Not sure I follow you Fidget, are you saying the AP isn't worth it because of the expense? Or is there something else to it? I intend on tossing on the usual suspects (intake, full TBE, BC), and as I see it you can upgrade to a 'Street Tuner' version of AP where I can fine tune my changes.. this sound right?
First off, there's nothing the AP does that's unique or different than ECUFlash to "hide" the previous flashes from dealers. That's a myth; it flashes in the same way. It's not a special and unique butterfly. No one has ever been "discovered" to have a flash on their car, or a previous flash.
The cost issue with the AP is unique. If you plan to go farther, with more custom modifications, it might behoove you to simply skip the AP, as the off the shelf, "Free" maps, are sorta limited; well, more limited than a custom tune.
If your shop supports and/or prefers the AP, though, there's no reason to not simply keep the AP and use them. My shop didn't really have a preference, so I just went the open source route; in the big picture, though, 600 bucks for an AP is... well, cheap.
If you're doing your own custom tunes, the AP might have a friendlier interface than the open source option; of that I cannot comment.

There's a lot of misinformation regarding the Cobb AP. VTC_XGSR, just stay on the Cobb recommended upgrade path and you will be good. If you do want to get a custom tune down the road, your car could be tuned with the AP just as easily as with any other tool. But, no matter what tool is used to do a custom tune on your car, you will pay about the same. Why don't you look at the For Sale section here to see if one is for sale?

Thanks for the info, personally I'd rather have a new one, just something about electronics that feels a bit more secure when new
It wont be gone. It will be better. The stock trubo is just to small. I cant stand the stock turbo even on E85 with a tune from GST. After 5000 the HP flatens out and stops climbing. If you look at a dyno on the stock turbo you will see the power bell instead of climb to red line. You will need to upgrade your turbo to turly get rid of the problem. But everything is a trade off. Once you go with a bigger turbo it will take longer to spool but keep pulling all the way to redline. On the street, for people who dont race, a stock turbo feels very fast. To make real power it has to go.

Yea you're not kidding, feels like the car really dies about 6k, I actually grimmace at the thought of running it out to the redline, not good comming from a Honda guy!
