I drove mine back eleven hours, definitely a great way to bond with the car!
You're on the right track, vary your RPMs often and definitely put the engine under light-moderate load every so often. You shouldn't have too big of a problem with this as you'll be accelerating onto the highway about every two hours after stopping for gas..
