Angry muffler on the road

so, i was driving home the other day in bumper to bumper traffic. we're doing 30km/h and i hear a clank from the car in front of me. out from the car emerges a muffler that was just sitting on the road. it looked like he drove over someone's muffler because he still had his. i literally had less than a second to react. i could swerve and cause an accident since both lanes are full or i could emergency brake and cause an accident and most likely still hit the muffler.

it looked like i could go over it without issue...well, i heard a clank as it went under. my heart sank. pulled over, not leaks or visible damage. took it to dealer and had it hoisted up...only damage was the muffler ripped off my front splash gaurd. $140 for the part $49 for labour. so $200 out of pocket for absolutely no reason. not even worth hassling insurance. DAMN IT!

anyone know where i can get the splash gaurd parts for cheaper?

It could have been worse. I was on the highway in heavy traffic in my Si when I saw the car in front of me hop up an inch or two into the air. It turns out a truck carrying scrap metal a few cars up dropped a huge hunk. I remember thinking at the time "I can either die trying to avoid this thing, or bang the #&@* out of the bottom of this car." The Si sits a lot lower than the car that was in front of me, and the metal gauged huge chunks out of my bumper and dented and scratched a number of parts under the car.

So it could have been worse. At least you weren't lowered.

installation is only $50 out of that $200. how am i supposed to get under the car to install it with only one spare wheel jack that came with the car? not worth the hassle. the part is $150 and hoping i can save there.

I would have got the information from the trucking company who lost the parts and went to town. Sent them the bill and got whatever else I could have out of them. There is NO reason why debris should be on the freeway... Serioulsy, this is why I have a video camera, still camera, and voice recorder in my car. Now-a-days you need physical Proof of EVERYTHING or its out of pocket for the consumer.

Unfortunately I was kind of shaken up and expected heavy damage, so I pulled over. I mean, it snagged on the exhaust in the back and kicked the rear end up off the ground a bit. I was going 65 or so after braking when I hit it. I was lucky I didn't spin out.

Still makes me angry thinking about it.

^Oh I understand dude. Once adrenaline kicks it's hard to think clear unless you're in that state of mind often. Usually the only thing that happens is you see everything in slow motion, so your tortured as everything gets effed up. Then you regain your senses and normal thought process and kick yourself for everything you should have done... I should dash mount my camera and set it to auto record once I start the car... hard wire it in.

You are actually lucky. It could have mashed your floorpan or something else a little less bolt-on. Believe me, I have experience running over ****. try a basketball sized rock some day..that $200 muffler kiss is just fine.

My windshield on my C6 decided to just crack in the hot sun a couple of days ago and that cost me $440.

^You should have called your insurance company. I know in Florida you get 1 free windshield replacement per year. In California i'm not sure, BUT I'm pretty sure insurance does help you out. I think because of the conditions of the road and weather; if it's caused by a natural or unavoidable cause i think it's discounted or free. You might be able to call or get it reimbursed or at least inquire about it. Was it recent?

At least you didn't hit a beaver after changing lanes twice and the creature runs into the car. I did.

I was in the same situation, except it was with a big orange pylon in the middle of the road. When I hit it my front Mitsu logo popped off. I had to go back and get it. I used some 2 part epoxy to glue it back on, now it's really stuck on there!
