Rev. Limiter

Lately I've been a total idiot and have bounced the car off the rev. limiter like 3 times this last month.. In my own defense I will say in the previous year it never happened.. althout I still feel stupid... the dual clutch is just less connected than the 5spd. I noticed that in Normal mode on the MR the redline limit is at 7500 rpm and in sport mode it hits at 8000 rpm.

My limited understanding is the rev limiter is there for protection purposes and as long as I don't do it all the time it ok (if it happens occasionally the engine should be fine).

Is this understanding correct?

I've notice no decrease in perfromance or any other problems, leaks, misfiring, etc.

As long as your car is well maintained and generally stock, it shouldn't be an issue. Make sure your oil is always fresh and that you don't bounce off for extended periods.

I am embarrassed to even ask this question, but what is the rev limiter set at for a stock 08 GSR?

I went well passed the red line the other day when I was paying more attention to merging traffic than the tach.

I was at about 8000 and no rev bounce off the rev limiter. I was kind of surprised. Is the rev limit that far into the red? Or should I bring my car in and have them look to see if there is a problem with the limiter?

I thought it was 7600 but I never tested it.

If you upshift, you can still go bypass the rev limiter and blow your motor (accidentally shifting 3rd into 2nd). The rev limiter just prevents you from doing it via throttle alone.

A 'money shift'. It's not just missed gears...if you're running a road course and don't rev match reasonably well then you can also over-rev. I've done my share of that.

What is "extended" period in this context? Over 10 seconds? 30 seconds? 5 minutes?

I bang off the limiter on the road course under high g-load every lap. Not enough time to up-shift, and pointless to let off. Roughly 2-3 seconds every lap. Add that up to roughly 30-45 seconds overall every time I go to that track. No issues.. even after two years. 5 quarts of VR1.

My friend tells me his Mitsubishi dealer was able to ascertain (from the black box) his EVO ran at 7300 rpm for nearly 3 minutes which can't possible be true, or CAN it? Further, the dealership would use the high rev data point to void his warranty. Again, can such a thing happen?
