Possibly new X GSR owner. Some Questions.
Hey everyone my name's Ryan. I'm new to this forum but I've been lurking around it for a little while now. I currently drive a 2005 Acura TL, I love the car but i'm in the market for a much quicker but civil ride. And I've looked into the STI and compared back and fourth of which to get. So I made my decision of it being the Evo X GSR. It's cheaper, it handles better and it has nicer options. And did I mention it's much better looking? Plus my friend's got an 05 STI modded. I wanna be able to stick with him and have a swell time. Haha. So here's some of my questions:
-How reliable are Evo's? How often do you change the oil and do service intervals? I'm already on top of that stuff, but i've always been weary of the Evo X's reliability. It's going to be my DD, so I wanna know this thing just wont break down on me. Since Honda's tend to just.. not break easily. What should I expect being a new Evo owner and what should I look out for. I'm very good with maintenance. Just i've never owned anything Turbo.
-The second question I have is, how is the MPG? I know it's no where near my TL. But that's expected of such a car..with it's capabilities. Plus I wouldn't drive the X insanely hard every day to gussle gas. What is the MPG like if I drive it in a very civil manor?
-My next question is, how durable are the suspension's on these cars before they need to be replaced. Im not going to bring it to a track every single day, but I assure you I will have some spirited driving since I live in the country.
-And my last question is, what's insurance like with me being at a mere 20 years old? Give me a ballpark. I want to know just what to expect.. Thanks.
PS: Sorry if I had posted this in the wrong area for this type of topic.
insurance will probably be the same opposed to an sti
gas mileage is not even bad, in my opinion its great..awd,turbo few mods here and there and ur still getting 22-25mpg average
the suspension not sure how durable or lasting but it does look promising they are heavy duty supposidly

I personally wouldn't be too worried about reliability. Mitsubishi can't afford to screw up in that department. If we talk about engine reliability, look no further, the aluminum block has proven to be one durable piece of engineering. Getting nearly 150hp per liter says alot in my opinion.
I think the DD factor is positive on this car. The MPG is not the best but that is to be expected given it's power and being limited to 5 gears which puts you at about 3200rpm doing 70mph.
But, between an Sti and Evo X, the choice would be obvious, for the look alone, and of course the Recaros.
Good luck buddy,

Reliability? In my first two years of ownership, my Evo has been as reliable as my '06 Civic Si was during its first two years. I have been in to the dealership once for a reflash, once for a loose sway bar end link, and once for a slew of recalls.
MPG? I keep extensive MPG notes. It's not good. I averaged about 19-20MPG prior to starting to mod and tune. My lifetime average including mods is 18.46MPG. Now, my Dad's '05 TL also averages right in that area (it has a 18/26 rating), so you may not see that big of a difference (Evo's 17/22) depending on how you drive.
Suspension? Don't know that anyone's ever measured that. I track mine a couple times a year, haven't had a problem yet.
Insurance? Bad. Mine's twice as expensive as my Si. Given all the things they take into account, comparing premiums is practically worthless. I'm lucky in that with 2 cars and 2 drivers I pay less than $100 a month, but there are people on here paying double that or more for just the Evo and 1 driver. You'll have to just get quotes, it's the only way to know.

1.Very reliable.
2. I usually see between 17-25 mpg when driving easy. 24, 25ish is driving extremely easy.
3.
No need to worry about suspension unless you just want to upgrade it.
4. Depends on your record. Are you going to be listed with your parents? I don't know if you still live with them. If you are listed with them its cheap as crap.

Mpg: i didnt measured it, but seem pretty good if not better than evo 8, 9 .
Suspension: very very smooth and quiet even with a Tein lowering springs. handle very good and tight. , way better than evo 8.
Reliability: just got about 4k miles , not too sure but nothing wrong yet

Insurance: very cheap for me, like 400$ every 6 months , I am 45 thou.

Overall, this car feel very tight, very smooth ride and handle awesome compared to evo 8,9 and STI subaru. It feel a little heavier than evo 8 and STi thou, but once u boost it up and get a good tune, it 's a very nice car. Good Luck.

These cars are honestly very reliable. Especially if you dont track it everyday. If you're worried about suspension the only reason you'd have a problem is if you drove it really hard alot. Ive owned an Evo 8, 9 MR and now a X GSR. I never tracked them hard and have always used them daily. I did mods on all of them, but they were the basics (intake, turboback exhaust, tune). And I never had an issue with them. Changing the oil etc is really pretty easy. I drive alot of highway miles and in my car get around 23 MGP highway and around 18 in the city.
I have23k on the clock with my GSR.
Mods- 3inch rexspeed DP, cobb AP, full TBB, and intake and AMS intercooler w/pipes
I average about 22 mpg combine city and highway.
I track the car 3-4 times during the summer.
Stock clutch with no slip.
Insurance is about 64 a month with 500 deduct, full coverage.
I'm 24, Married, no points.
Car runs great and is very reliable.

Boost is insane - it's like a drug. Before I had it I was like "What's the big deal? My TSX gets up and moves when it wants to, and is fun with the 6 speed" (and I still stick by that)... but after driving the Evo for the first few days, no contest.I've now got about as many miles on my X as I did on my TSX when I traded it in - maybe a little less (I bought both of them new). I've been to the dealer exactly 0 times with either. I had an old 1.8L Eclipse back in the day and it was a reliability nightmare. I went through two engines on that car, and my brother then went through another 1.8 before he swapped in a 4G63 and never had any more problems until he sold it. That experienced scared me off of Mitsu for 10 years, but the X was so enticing that I decided to just go for it. I'm REALLY glad I did.
I'm a Honda/Acura guy at heart (I still have a CRV I drive in the winter and wife has an Accord), but I love my Evo. Take the plunge. You'll love it.
EDIT - I should add that the X is surprisingly easy to drive / live with every day. I've let a few friends drive my car just recently and they were all really surprised at how easy it was to just drive down the road and around town. I think a lot of them thought it was going to be really stiff, really loud, and for some reason difficult to drive "nicely." It's not.
The only concern I would have in your situation is insurance cost. Get on the phone and get some quotes to see where you stand.
However, since you're concerned with costs, maintenance will be much more than a TL. Tires, Syn. motor oil, tranny and diff fluids are all going to need to be changed more frequently. It does add up if you follow a proper maintenance schedule.
My X has had no reliability issues (20k mi). I haven't seen any suspension issues on the forums. I wouldn't think your gas mileage would be too different except for on the highway.

If you are 20, you might want to have your mom's name on it. You are looking at about 300 dollars a month depends on where you live.... 150+ on gas if you drive an average of 1000-1200 miles a month. If you have the dough, why not?
Hey Ryan Albany area here.
The Evo is very relaiable. Change the oil every 3,000 miles and put the 93 in the tank and and you'll be good.
I drove mine for work for 12K before I got a company car and it works fine for a daily driver. I do alot of business in Woodstock and had the chance to drive my X in the Woodstock/Saugerties area and trust me you'll have alot of fun on those back roads just make sure you save up for some tires.
Route 44/55 that connects New Paltz to Kerhonksen via mountain pass is awesome in this car.
MPG's you'll be between 20-25 on average.
The suspension holds up pretty good on our crappy upstate roads.
The insurance on the car will be pricey since you're still in the risk pool and the cars a turbo, I suggest defensive driving to lower your payments.
Good luck and if you have any more questions or need some help drop me a PM

MPG isn't the best imo. I haven't been tuned yet, but I'm sure it'll help. As of now, I'm barely getting 210-220 miles to the tank, and I fill up 11-12 gallons iirc, so it's somewhere between 17-18mpg. And this is a mix of freeway/street. I was getting over 24 on my 8.
