Here is what I've personally done to my car:

-removed clutch restrictor pill
-changed tranny fluid to the Redline cocktail
-WORKS short shifter ($150)
-WORKS shifter bushings (base and cable)
-WORKS Grab aluminum shift knob
-AMS shifter gate pivot bushing

With these mods done I am very happy with the feel! It actually shifts like a sports car should. I spent just under $300 total for everything above and it was worth every penny.
How much of a difference did the WORKS short shifter make?

Nope. I ran a short-shifter on my IX for 2 years and that transmission was still shifting perfectly when I sold the it with over 50k miles.

Quite a bit. They state the throw reduction to be 25% which seems about right, plus the knob sits a little lower. It is definitely a quality piece that I'd recommend to anyone. WORKS really seems to back their products with actual R&D testing which I like (unfortunately, it's becoming rare in this industry).

Thanks for the great info. I will say that the control I was speaking of has little to do with the actual ability select a gear (its only part of the issue as I will drive in "manual" for time to time)...(for me at least) and the use of the clutch pedal turned out to very much part of the fun in driving these types of cars for me. Now, I still think the SST is great for what it does but the way its tuned needs adjusting for me to really enjoy it in an EVO.

My father has an M5 and it shifts way better. Same with most m3's ive driven. Maby my detents are muffed.

I think its horrible, then again, I don't go and drive "normal" cars every day

I have to agree with everyone. The shifting on the X is horrible. I thought it was just me at first and not being used to an Evo, but after driving a bunch of different manual cars, I have to say the X shifts the worst. I still get that notchy grinding feel when I go from first to second and second to third

I had a little issue with the Transmission Arm bushing, but thanks to Kracka, a little grease cleared that right up.

+ 1 for me... Same setup and nothing to say except it run smoother now.

This was one of my best move to fix the tranny shifting issues...

You guys are smoking crack . I'll go with my ownership experience - the e46 M3 feels like a big rubber band is attached. The gears were very close together and LOTS of folks were doing over revs downshifting to the wrong gear. It was a great car but its really not that great a gearbox. I miss the 6th gear but I much prefer the X. The X almost feels gated.

Thanks everyone for the good info. I'll contact COBB in Plano and see what they can do.If they can't tune it to improve this issue then I will look at my options. Either way...I'm driving an EVO.

Heard from a few buddies about the manual tranny in the X not shifting as smooth as they want it to be. I'll definitely do the mods above when I get a X of my own.

The shifter in the X feels the same as the shifter in my old Jetta. Like crap...I'm about to get the TWM SS installed and then changing out the tranny fluid. From what I hear, this is a pretty standard and needed upgrade that everyone in the community performs.

I am in the middle. I definitely prefer the feel of the X shifter to German cars. I have never liked bushings or short throw shifters. I want the freaking NOTCH to go away. My first X had it terrible on second and third. This one barely has it, but if its cold outside and the car is not warmed up for a good 15+ minutes, it will buzz going into second at high RPM.

I pulled the OEM fluid and went to BG, and it helped a little, but I still don't feel like I can do a fast 1-2 at redline ever.

Tell me which mod will guarantee to correct this and I'll buy it first thing on Monday! I just want this car to have no synchronizer issues like every VIII, IX, and the VI that I drove.

Isn't the tranny pretty strong though? I mean was it over done and just made it a bit rougher?
