What I've done was zip-tie it on, show a cop so he can sign off on my ticket and mail it in. Afterwards, take it back off.

Our laws here state it has to be "bolted" to the car. They just didn't say how...

Ah, in that case - an idea:

My dealer had my front plate bolted to a plastic license plate holder and then used bunjee cords to attach it to the plastic cross-bar above the intercooler.

I only put it on when I cruise the mountains but I used the existing bolt to mount this hide a plate

That won't work here, must be on the car. They specifically told me zip-ties were out of the question when I called about my ticket. I have no idea how using dikes to cut or sockets to remove make it more permanent...

I then got a compliment from the officer inspecting my car about how awesome it was and how they have never seen a plate mounted like that. I was nervous, it worked out, they are morons...

I just sucked it up and attached the supplied adapter. But first I took the crappy looking plastic part to a body shop to have it painted Rally Red. It only cost $75, and I got used to the look to the point that I wouldn't want to go back. There's something satisfying about making the Evo look used sometimes. I imagine with some creativity one could create a quick release mount for the front plate for those who don't want a permanent attachement.
