Smile What fits me better 5MT or SST ?

Hello,

I am obviously new to the forums, have been lurking around before registering and loving this site, very informative.

I am buying a used Evo X soon, just looking for a good deal, coming from a very different world, a MY07 AT civic, very slow.

I drive in traffic a lot, mostly going to college and i haven't driven a manual since i had my license.

I would love to learn MT and i like the price advantage, also tuners in the area are not very skilled and i though it would be simpler/easier to tune a manual.

What attracts me to the MT also is the fact that i can always go big in terms of power if i want to, in the far future, i know i won't leave the car stock, also the maintenance of the MT is probably less costly and more practical on the long term.

What pushes me away from the MT is the mostly traffic jam around where i drive and the fact that, as i have said already, is that i came from a very slow car, so going from that to a manual ~300hp car might be a scary experience.

Please let me know your opinions and i apologize if this topic is brought up a lot.

Go with manual. up until about a year ago i never even owned an automatic and im 31 (been driving for almost 17 years). Learned how to drive on a manual and refused to own an automatic till i got married lol. Wife doesn't know how to drive a stick and im not about to teach her on my EVO. Performance cars with auto, triptonic(SP), or any of that other krap is epic fail IMHO. The only time i hate driving the Evo is in New york city rush hour trafffic =/ Exedy Twin Disk HD clutch sucks in stop and go traffic.

I would say manual too, but come on, you've already stated that it'll be a traffic grinder. That's why they made the Evo X SE for 2010! GSR price for the SST in traffic. It's up to you. I appreciate my SST in traffic to say the least.

The Evo X 5sp MT is no more difficult to drive than any other manual shift car. If all your driving is in bumper to bumper backups then a different vehicle would be a better choice.

<althought the clutch is easy on the X, it will be an expensive lesson and you WILL fried your clutch>

<If the tuners are not even skilled, they should not be tuning an Evo..manual or not>

What attracts me to the MT also is the fact that i can always go big in terms of power if i want to, in the far future, i know i won't leave the car stock, also the maintenance of the MT is probably less costly and more practical on the long term.

< you will be suprised at the costs for clutch repairs on the X, its no honda>

What pushes me away from the MT is the mostly traffic jam around where i drive and the fact that, as i have said already, is that i came from a very slow car, so going from that to a manual ~300hp car might be a scary experience.

< horsepower does not affect drivability, you apply control to the throttle just like your civic>

Please let me know your opinions and i apologize if this topic is brought up a lot.

hope you will enjoy your Evo as much as I did

I always hears complaint about the 5mt on the highway. I own a EvoIX 6mt and when going 75-80 on the highway the revs are pretty high already, I can't imagine doing that in a 5mt, it would drive me crazy.

However, the SST would be nice if you don't plan on voiding the warranty. I was initially going to buy the EVo X with SST but heard some horror stories on the costs of repairing the transmission when they failed due to modding. PM me for prices I heard if you want to know. Anyways, that scared me away from the X, and there was no way I was goign to get a Evo X GSR because I do alot of highway driving.

Hence I bought my 2006 Evo IX MR 2 weeks ago and love it. I drove almost 500 miles to get a good deal but the deal it done and I'm happy.

Also, don't listen to those who say the SST is fail, its not trust me. No one on this forums can shift a manual tanny as fast as the SST can shift. Its not like most automatic-like transmissions one ht market today. It works almost liek a sport bike transmission. the reason it shifts so fast is because example... when starting off in 1st gear 2nd gear is already spinning, when you'er in 2nd gear, 3rd gear is already spinning etc.

thats my 2 cents.

I would love to suggest you to get the 5MT just because I have it....but I'll say get the MR. I just think you'll like it better as long as you're careful and prudent with maintenance/mods. Do your research on this and the other forums periodically to ensure you are not following the wrong path for any planned modification. You'll do well with an SST.

You haven't driven a manual since you had your license and you spend a lot of time in heavy traffic. You will probably regret not getting the TC-SST IMO. Unless you have very high HP goals it would be the better choice based on your initial post but the bottom line is that only you really know what's best for you. I had driven strickly manual transmission cars for exactly 18 years straight and to this day I do not regret getting the MR one bit.
