Cost to paint a carbon fiber hood
My car is currently at a body shop to repair a bumper dent someone left for me in a parking lot. While it's there, I wanted the shop to paint my aftermarket carbon fiber hood to match the body paint. They quoted $660 to prep/paint/clear the top of the hood and color match the underside to the matte color of the engine bay. I told them I'd prefer to not blend the fenders, as I don't want the stock hood to look mismatched if/when I reinstall that in the future.
Do you think this is a reasonable price for the prep work and paint?

That also seems a little high to me.
The bottom side is going to be basically just the base coat without clear to match the engine bay.
Have you tried getting a quote from a different shop?

definatly look around, i think they are assuming they will be blending the outwards colors even to fenders and bumper so it wouldn't look like it stands out?
Took just the carbon fiber hood to a local paint shop, and it came out $200, with everything done, i didn't bother with the underside though.

I just received a repair estimate for my hood from some dumb pedestrian hitting me. The OEM hood itself was $924 BTW.
Not counting the labor to R&I all the trim stuff, which you probably should consider, the material cost for the hood was $147 and the labor was $280 ($57/hr labor). The blending is HIGHLY recommended by any body pro I've ever talked to, it's a must have they say. The blending into the fender was 0.4 hr of labor and $12 additional material. I got that in writing, its "reasonable and customary" because my estimator is in the preferred network with my insurance carrier. They pay them no questions asked, indicating to me its a fair or discounted estimate to guarantee everyone a certain volume of business.

I'm leaning towards having a CF hood replace my OEM one and just clearcoat it and apply the other paint/labor to adding black pin stripes along the sides (my x is apex silver), something Mitsubishi should have offered us from the factory IMO.
After some consideration and doing some research online, I think the price is sort of fair...possibly a bit overpriced. I've read stories of guys on other car forums getting hoods painted for $600-1000 easily. I'm a believer of getting what you pay for, so I could understand paying ~$5-600 for a perfect job. With that being said, I just never anticipated paying more to have a hood painted than the hood costs brand new. I called a local Maaco just for a comparison quote, but they won't touch carbon fiber, so I'll have to hit some more body shops for quotes.
If they charged me $200 to paint the hood, I would have been totally sketched out to be honest. I'll pony up the cash to have a good job done, but a good paint job on a hood isn't worth $650 to me.
Thanks for the input though, everyone. I'm tired of looking at the crappy weave on my cheap cf hood, so hopefully it'll be painted soon enough

I've never gotten a carbon fiber hood painted but I did get my Seibon OEM Carbon wing painted/prep/cleared coated and it was about $245...a hood probably around $3 to $400 ish....gotta figure the cost of the materials and labor too....
