cold start noise (vid included)

ok so i tried searching for this but nothing came up. My knowledge on cars is decent but im not very good with belts and pulleys etc.

anyways theres a noise from my belt that sounds likea whining noise that is usually really noticeable when its just warming up.

Im not sure what is wrong but im guessing my belt is getting worn down? It has 24,000 miles on it and ive had it for 2 years now.

you can hear the noise underneath the hissing sound... it sounds like a "nenenenenenenene"

if anyone can help me please feel free to chime in!

either click on the link or pic! thanks!

I guess mitsu never changes this. I use to have an evo 9 and at 40k this started to happen. took it to the dealer and they say that it was a worn belt. Later, at 60k, I finally changed the timing belt and that was it, everything was then quite. It's the timing belt, mines was rubbing against a metal plate, not really sure what what it. Some other people also had similar issue with timing and the other belts. Just take it to Mitsu, they should cover it on the warranty.

Evo X's use a timing chain. It might be the accessory belt or the tensioner. Vid doesn't help much.

Damn I would not do that. Any pulley under load will start to slip, for example your power steering.

Lol not really ....If there is a noise it will momentarily go away , the belt is under to much tension to make is slip so easily i guess you don't know how mechanics works .

There is a product called belt dressing, you can get it at most any auto parts store, comes in a spray can. spray some on your belt, if noise goes away you need to adjust or replace the belt. inspect the belt carefully if it's cracked at all on either side replace it. do not spray oil on your belts.

I'm at work right now and can't watch the video, but the "nenenene" sound is the best description I've heard of the sound my X has been making too. It speeds up and slows down with engine speed and it's only noticeable in parking lot speeds or at idle when the engine is quieter. Still hear it regardless of clutch in/out or gear in/neutral.

Also I noticed that after my car sits for a day and I start it up and turn the heater fan on it makes a pretty loud groaning/squealing sound for a second.

I'm definitely going to take a look at my belt tonight when I get home.

ok guys after having this thread dead for a while i had a evo X with a almost identical noise.

fault turn out to be a bent sump pan. the clearance between the oil pick up and sump pan is very tight. at some point the vehicle had a timing chain at a previous shop and had been jacked/balanced on the sump pan during removal of the engine mount. the noise was the cavitaion in the oil pump as it struggled to lubricate from cold.

Hate to bring up an old thread but I still have the problem, I haven't replaced anything including fluids my car is at 27k and will get new fluids soon.

As far as the timing beltt, do I have to buy it at a mitsu dealershipp or can I buy it at autozone?

In this video there is a kind of rattling noise that almost sounds like piston slap. My car makes this same noise when cold, but when it reaches operating temp it goes away. Is that normal?
