Almost regretting my X purchase
Almost regretting my X purchase
So after reading numerous threads about these horror stories associated with failing transfer cases, bad ACDs, leaking CV boots, relay issues, Mitsubishi not living up to warranty claims and poor dealership service all around, I'm really getting paranoid and worried I made a bad decision with this car. Don't get me wrong, I did my homework on the car, but these issues aren't readily available to potential buyers. Initial reviews of the car are good, and on paper it's a solid car, but now that I've been in the "community" for a bit, the flaws are really becoming apparent with the number of threads popping up concerning these issues. I am left feeling like I have to baby this car rather than drive the **** outta it - which is why I paid close to $36k for it.
Am I overreacting and getting paranoid for no reason or is this thing really a ticking time bomb? I take good care of my cars, so the necessary maintenance is not an issue. But i do want to feel confident im in a strong car that can be pushed to the limit on occasion. Repairing and paying for things that are constantly breaking due to being "overdriven", that mitsu refuses to cover under warranty, isn't anything I'm planning on doing.
Can somebody talk me off the ledge here and help me realize I made a good decision purchasing this car (2011 GSR)?

no just jump lol
i hope you didn't buy it and hope to never have to work on it. if you drive it like you stole it stuff always breaks. should have bought a evo 8 for half that price that way you can fix 5x over before you hit 36k lol.

That's what I'm reading is happening though, guys paying out of pocket for stuff that the dealership refuses to cover under warranty - that shouldn't be going wrong so early, even if you are beating the **** outta the car.
Meh, quit worrying about it. My X is 3 years old and ~140whp beyond stock and if it hasn't blown up with 20k, yours won't ever blow up stock. I was 90whp beyond stock at 2000 miles, rocking strong. Just don't drive it like a head case by launching it all the time, maintain it well, and it will last ya.
I believe you are reading into too much.
Honestly, and I know this has been beat to death, but if you modify the car; e.g. tune, turbo, E-85, meth, etc, is it really
responsibility to pay for the repairs? Nevertheless, there are plenty of cars, that if you abuse, are going to need repairs.
Other than maintenance, you'll be fine with your GSR.
I've had 3 X's and other than a broken throttle pedal, I never had an issue.

I think you may be overreacting a bit. There are a lot of other owners here on the forum who drive their cars hard and never had a problem. As for Mitsubishi not covering the car, well that might have to do with people modding their cars, and wanting the dealer to cover the costs when stuff breaks.

LOL nothing new since 2003 when the EVO came to the states man. Hope nobody really thought that was gonna change with the X
I bought mine knowing damn well it would never see the inside of a dealership again.
Nor would I want 95% of those monkeys with in 20 ft of my car with a wrench.
You bought a performance car man **** will break, tires will wear, proper maintenance is a must, and parts aren't cheap

Instead of talking absolutes, let's talk about all of the bullets you avoided. This is going to be fun.

Now, if that hasn't convinced you that you bought the best sports car in its price range, and one of the best for any amount of money, lets hear what members of other forums have to say about the Evo X:

Are you off the ledge yet?

- Over-lean factory tune that knocks.
- Headaches with PCV system; oil consumption while in boost.
- Ringland failure on un-modified vehicles.
135i
- High-pressure fuel pump failures.
- Defective VANOS
- Oil temperature problems on earlier models.
- Hidden "tune detection" codes in the factory ECM.

[Evo's] have a larger turbo from the factory. Plain and simple, larger turbo=more potential out of the stock turbo.
Inline motors are more robust than boxers. Due to their design, boxer motors don't dissipate heat as well as an inline. This is the reason why they're typically tuned more conservatively than inlines. Take a look over in the dyno section, as well as over on EvolutionM.net's dyno section, and you'll see people tune EVO's at leaner AFR's. The reason for this is, since boxers don't dissipate heat as well, they have to run them richer in order to cool the heads to stave off detonation. This is why typically, with all things equal (displacement, port on head(s), cams, compression ratio ect) running the same turbo, boost pressures & degrees of timing, an inline will make more power, as they will be able to run leaner AFR's on pump gas. It's sad, but the truth. To make the same power, on the same setup (turbo) on pump gas, Subie's are pretty much always going to have to push more boost/timing advance to make the same power as an EVO. Our only real saving grace is the fact we run big bore motors, so in stock form, we have more displacement to work with.

IMO the x is more adult then the 1, I'm only 5' 7 and the 135 hurts my back when trying to sit in it. My x is just as fast as a 1 with 4 doors and room for a baby seat but doesn't look like an ugly hatch like the sti, while the 1 can barely fit a lamp in the back seat when coming home from one of those impromptu trips to ikea with wifee. Also, keep in mind that the x was built as the more mature version of the ix, mistu could have easily developed another car that DOMINATES all in sheer performance the way the ix's did and still do (race a ix you'll be annihilated) but they created a monumentally advance handling vehicle, that is more environmentally friendly and technologically advanced with its aluminum engine and s-awc, and nav system. Much nicer interior although still plastic, seats in the x are untouchable (so nice).
Handling wise, especially on a track, the Evo will **** all over the 1er.
The EVO is a laser focused driving experience, there's a lot to love about that car, but I suspected it would grow old on me when I wasn't in the mood... The EVO is a dynamo that needs to be on back roads and racetracks, not mushing along in the daily crawl.

Unless you TT your Z you aren't going to be killing any evo's.
These cars are heavier but extremely nimble on the track. Although heavier...the Evo X was a huge improvement over the IX performance wise. As mod friendly the 4G63 is...the 4B11 has proven to be even more responsive to modifications...its just plain wrong how fast you can make that car!!!!

Most people post on forums like this when they have problems or questions, so of course youre gonna see a ton of topics covering various issues. That doesnt mean every car has problems. Just enjoy your car!
You'll read a lot more posts here about things breaking than about things not breaking. For every person who's had their center diff pins back out, there are another hundred who haven't had the problem. When you're on a forum all of the time, you're overwhelmed by the negative issues.
At least that's the case for me. That's why my paraniod self had the CMC and center diff pins proactively upgraded

It all depends on how you drive it honestly. I bought my IX brand new and never had a single problem that wasn't caused by me like stock clutch not liking over 400wtq around 3500 rpm. Stock asvans wore out at about 12000 miles and blew some clamps lol that's it. I had full bolt ons minus cams making 420awhp on E85 and it was very reliable. I know you are talking about an X, but same concept I believe. I didn't baby it either, but I never took it to a roadcourse or launched at every stoplight.
As mentioned, the forums will get you very paranoid. I had an 09 WRX that was really a great car but I kept reading on natty/sac about engine failures so I sold it and got an Evo. Pros and cons to both cars but as long as you maintain them and aren't driving like a a$$hat everytime your on the road, you should be fine
