What Evo X to buy
What Evo X to buy
Apparently not only did my last thread get deleted, I also got kicked out of the forum. Clearly, I am not a troll (I kept the same damn screen name for heavens sake!!), I am seriously looking into buying one. It will be my next car. I do, however, do massive research before I buy anything. I want the knowledge of enthusiasts before I buy a car and modify it.
With that said, I now need to start over again. It seems, iirc, anything over 400whp needs to have a built engine on a a GSR. The GSR is the better choice for high power.
I love the idea of the SE. It sounds like the perfect daily driver to me. The downsides, reliablility of the SST. I'd like to think that since it's been a couple years since it debuted in the MR most of the kinks would be worked out. I don't know if it's an updated version or not though.
My goal would be to either go with a stage 2 SE, hopefully finding a dealership that wouldn't screw me over on the warranty while doing so (it would be bought in Denver). If that would be an issue, I thought about going straight to a 08 GSR and putting the Cobb 400s package on it. Buying local and off of a local person. Actually found a great candidate on craigslist. I want, no, need reliability with fun. Whatever I decide on I will have it tuned on91 and E85.
So, questions.
Does anyone have any experience with dealerships in Denver? Are they mod friendly?
Is the SST in the SE an improved vesion over the original version in the 08 MR?
Any advice or thoughts on mods would be appreciated. I really just need to know what is the most power I can run reliably on the stock engine. I understand on the GSR that other things need to be upgraded as well (clutch, clutch master cylinder iirc). My goal would be to keep the X as a fun daily driver, use the WRX as a road course race car, and keep the POS Saturn as a work car ( I work in the oilfield, very dirty).

The GSR can handle more than 400hp before needing a built engine. It's the torque that kills it. On stock internals, the GSR needs to be no more than 360~370wtq. The 400s would prolly be your best bet. Either that or calling ETS and getting a whole turbo kit.
If you run 91 I would def do the 400s tho.
The SST is the same in all cars from 08-11 even in the SE. It is reliable but the ceiling is lower on the stock clutches.

Just a thought. If you want more bullet proof engine, & big numbers, why not considered a used IX? The 4G63 engine still is the more robust engine base on feedbacks.
& I am not saying this as I have an IX.

With the power level you seem to be shooting for I recommend the sst. The car is incredibly fun and i personally dont miss the stick shift. This is my first "auto". Either way you go you can't go wrong though. Good luck

The warranty issue is clearly on my mind. I have no desire to buy a buy a new car and ruin the only reason of buying it new. I know that Mitsubishi can't disclaim your warranty unless the aftermarket part that was put on can be proven to be the cause of the issue, but I have no desire to fight with a dealership over the matter while my car sits there waiting to be fixed.
As far as I can tell, the only thing that I would like on the GSR that are not standard equipment are the better brakes and the 710 watt sound system. The suspension is a crap shoot cause I'd put coil overs on both anyway. The leather seats in the MR I hate and won't buy it at all because of that (hence the SE). If I bought a used GSR, could I put the stereo system and the better brakes on it?
Better brakes? You'll still get Brembo's on a GSR or SE. Only difference is that SE's have two piece rotors. For a daily driver you probably wont notice a huge difference between one piece and two piece rotors. People say two piece rotors weigh less and cool better.
To show what I was talking about when I said that the 4B11 can hold more than 400hp check out this thread.. They kept the torque around 360ish..

O yea. Well, the only difference in the brakes are the rotors. The MR has 2-piece rotors. But you can replace the stock 1-piece rotors easily. And the stereo system is very easy to replace as well.
