A/C Compressor Constantly Cycling
A/C Compressor Constantly Cycling
Its a '10 GSR w/ 9500k unmodified miles.
Been a bit of a garage queen as summer is my riding season but I drive it occasionally when I need to haul stuff.
Here is the issue: My A/C compressor is engaging every five seconds when I have the A/C on.
5 seconds of the A/C compressor kicking on, then it is off for about 10 seconds. Then it cycles back on again for five seconds and repeats.
This does not seem normal at all based on all the cars I have previously owned.
Anyone else had this issue? Seems to me like the refrigerant may be low.
Aprreciate any input.
I still have loads of warranty left so I am not very concerned but I don't want to hear the "its normal" B.S. from my service writer if it is, in fact, not normal.
Thanks

I have been having the same issue and thought the same thing about the freon being low so I did an evac and recharge. The OEM spec for charge is 500g and I pulled 510g out so the charge was not the issue. I recharged it up to spec and checked it and it still does it, but only at idle, and the A/C gets nice and cold, about 40 degrees out the vent which is really good for here at idle in a bay.
Mine turns on and off the same amount of time when the car is idling. I notice it a lot when I park in front of a redbox and wait in line to get a movie. The fan is incredibly loud as well. Always seemed normal to me for the car.

However, it was the frequency of the cycling that had me concerned. All the other vehicles I have ever owned have not cycled on and off as rapidly as this one.
Its sometimes referred to as 'short cycling' and is an indication of low freon or another system problem.
If everyone's Evo is the same way though, I think this might be nothing to worry about.
I appreciate the input.
yamasaki what you're describing is completely normal. i have a '10 MR and had an '08 GTS which both act exactly the same. when you have the temp knob in your car turned all the way counter-clockwise it will engage about every 5 seconds, then disengage for about 10 and repeats. one click clockwise and you'll notice a different pattern that it stays on. this second pattern is what it stays on as long as you have the ac button depressed no matter what your temp knob is set to, unless its all the way counter-clockwise. it's like ac and then MAX ac when you have it all the way counter-clockwise. when you turn on the defrost climate zone selection for your front windshield, even when your ac button isn't depressed you'll hear the clutch kick in again, this is also normal. nothing is wrong with your car.
