Questions from an Evo 9 owner possibly veering to a X MR

**NOTE.... i know these questions are probably WAY over asked... so i apologize in advance, and ignore it if you like ***

Hey guys (and girls)... i have a fairly "built" Evo IX RS... its my daily driver, and for several reasons, i am thinking about putting it back to stock, and trading it in for an Evo X MR...

here are a few of my reasons...

1. it is becoming more and more uncomfortable to drive as the mods keep getting put on...... (and i know i can take the mods off, or just stop modding it...but thats impossible for me lol)

2. being a daily driver, it is also becoming very much a very noticeable car.. although i dont ever get hassled by cops...

3. when i bought the car, i was VERY upside down on my trade in, so my payments are $720 each month (and the loan was for 60 months!) OUCH! i have $13,000 left on the loan, so i am very much in the green now and will use the equity as the down payment...

4.if i buy the MR, ive heard you really cant mod the tranny past 400whp.. so it would keep me limited on what i can do...which is a good thing for me! and going from the "race" model lacking sound deadening material and all comfort options, to the fully loaded model will feel quite nice

so, i guess my questions are....

1. for those who have gone from their evo 8/9 to a 10.... how did you feel? any of you regret it?

2. for those who have the MR... what do you think about it? how do you like the "auto" tranny??

3. ive heard things about the tranny overheating on the track, are there fixes for this? can the MR safelty be beaten up on the track for a full day if mods are done to the tranny? (if they exist)

thanks in advance guys..... and if anyone has anything else the feel like adding to this, feel free

heres a few badly taken pics of my current evo

Keep the RS and save up for a X. I regret the day I got rid of my IX and still wish I kept it.

Well if your going to get a X and want to track it the 5 speed GSR would be he better choice. I have never driven a X MR but from what I understand there is a lot more involved that needs to be done to beef up the SST tranny so that it can handle more power. Also part your IX out. You will get more for it.

Love my X, you couldn't pay me to take my IX back. That's not entirely the IX's fault since I feel I modded it too far to be a good daily-driver, but my honest opinion is that the X is a superior car in every way.

The SST transmission can take mods just fine, but it seems like if you plan to surpass 400whp you're wise to upgrade the clutch discs. I'd also throw an aftermarket cooler on even a stock MR since heat is the killer.

The SST can be taken to a track but, especially on warm days, the tranny will get overheated. If you get an upgraded trans cooler it should be fine. And the SST can take up to around 360ish wtq(at least that is what is recommended) and be just fine. You could prolly hit 400WHP and be fine too. It's not the tranny that blows up. Just like a GSR, the clutches can only take so much power. Even with a 5-speed you will prolly have to change to a better clutch once the power starts getting that high.

I think at first you will absolutely love it because it is new, much more comfortable, and different. But after a month or so you would start missing the IX a little bit. But that is why we mod these cars anyway. Once it kinda starts feeling bland or slow, buy a few more mods. If that is your DD then I would definitely go with the MR.

AND 720/MONTH?!? holy crap!! that's insane I thought my 560 was rough.

I can't imagine wanting a IX after driving a X. The car is really superior in just about every way.

You can upgrade the clutch on an MR just like you would on a 5speed, just at a little more cost. Don't fool yourself into thinking that that little issue will hold you back from "over" modding your MR

Also, as ugakirk said, 720 is rough! I pay 700 a month but I only financed the remainder for 36 months.

I have two good friends with Evo X's, one of them is a '10 GSR and one an '08 MR. I think the MR's SST is pretty neat and even shifts like a MT (without you doing the shifting of course). I like the over-all handling of both cars, and like the GSR just because I still am a traditional MT guy.

HOWEVER- As much as the X has grown on me, and I would highly recommend it to a new Evo buyer, I would never part with my IX for one. Having owned an VIII & IX MR, and been in a X GSR/MR, I honestly feel the IX is the rawest Evo out there. The X is a great daily driver, has nicer creature comforts, and is still a lot of fun, but I vote keeping the IX and saving your regrets ...Just my $.02

Wow what a nice RS... don't sell that car man... I can attest to the TC-SST when I had the Ralliart it was a blast not worrying about a clutch pedal and the rev-matching of the Sport (or extra S-Sport in the case of the MR) is just out of this world

as a daily driver I had no complaints, I just couldn't see myself owning the TC-SST past 60k miles or so and I don't know what will my options be 4 years down the road with that transmission so I bought me a X GSR that I'm planning to keep till the bolts begin to fall off... get the MR, it's a wonderful machine, just like a GSR but "auto" lol

I always look up on Cars.com and there are 2010 Evo MR Touring (FULLY LOADED) in the mid 30's with very little mileage (mostly under 10k) u should try that... trading the RS would be my last option if I was going to get a slightly used 2010 MR-T and the bank didn't want to give me a full loan or an attractive APR

IMO, the issue is deeper. You aren't wanting out of your car because you dislike the IX, you want out because you have way overmodded it to the point it's not enjoyable off a racetrack. Plus, you have a ballistic sky-high payment, and that has to suck.

I could be wrong, but think you would just mod the X in the same way, to the point where you will be right back in the same spot.

To me, the best thing you could do is seriously de-mod that IX, sell all the extra parts you pull, pay it off within the next 10-12 months, and enjoy it at a lighter mod level since you only have room for one car.

On the topic of which I like better, I still can't decide after three and a half years! I like both for different reasons. Overall, I like the X better, but for an all out modded car, I would still prefer a CT9A. That lesser curb weight, stronger engine, and taller final drive go a long way in the tunability department.

I had a IX MR that looked very similar to your RS (big wing, C-West bumper with Voltex canards ) and I got rid of it for largely the same reasons (mainly the attention). But, I went to an M3. Now I'm out of the M3 and back in to an Evo X MR and I wouldn't have it any other way. The Evo X MR is very similar to the IX in all the good ways and different in all the ways that are better than the IX. If you are looking for something more drivable, you can't beat the MR. I love the TC-SST because you can manual shift it if you feel like it, or let it take over if you want. Even in "Normal" mode it always seems to be in the right gear for what I would pick for any given moment if I were driving a manual. Plus my wife says "it sounds just like a manual, but being driven really really well!"

As for tracking the X MR, it doesn't take a "ton of mods". All you need is an aftermarket tranny cooler. Even just slapping a fan on the stock cooler has been proven to help. Once you start bumping the power up over 400hp, think about a clutch pack. That's all you need. Heck, when you start bumping the power on a manual you have to worry about the clutch anyway.

As much as I loved my IX, I'm happy with the X MR. It fits all my needs.
