convince me im doing the right thing, or tell me im wrong!
I put 50k on a brand new 8 & now have the X. Let's just say that I definitely do not regret buying the X. Go hit a couple bends at speed in the X & report back. I bet you will be reporting back as a X owner.
and damn it your making it hard not to go trade in tomorrow cuz my 8 is white and thats the color i would want my x if i decide to trade.
i agree with everyone about the "raw" feeling of the 8 and 9s. i worked at manheim auction for 3 years and drove every car imaginable minus the gtrs they werent out at the time i worked there, and i also never had driven an evo while i worked there. and i have to say the evo has a unique feel to it compared to any other car, and i would hate to lose that feeling with the x. i could however see it a plus if you guys are saying its more suited for a fast dd and is comfortable.
as far as being more expensive to make fast that kind of sucks because well thats part of what being an evo owner is all about i think
i havent yet seen what the payments would look like but insurance i would think would stay close to the same maybe a tad higher since its a brand new car so that wouldn leave me much to work with on funds for moddifying it. im sure in a year when i turn 25 insurance will drop and allow me more breathing room.how about recalls and annoyances? for example the evo 8s and i think the 9s the brembos faded to pink really fast, the single stage paint on the non metallic colors absolutely sucked and chipped very easily, and the 8s had problems with the hvac system and the climate control knobs freezing up from the lack of a cabin filter. anything i should be aware of if i make the switch? i seen another thread on the x about something with the fuel rail being a hazard and can potentially catch fire which is scary as hell to think about.
What total control means to you? Because in the MR you have a same thing LOL other wise you crash.
All evo is fun, the difference is the invested money into them.
As the evolution history shows. Every gen. Is faster then a previous one.
But end of the day they are equal.
Every evo has pos and negative values.
The. X is the most capable car as a DD-er and track car.
Mitsubishi did a good job with this completely new car.

when i said in "total" control i was referring to optiblue's post saying the real question is whether i would find myself in a manual or sst with paddle shifters. to me when you drive a manual you have a more complete feeling like you have become part of the machine as opposed to just flicking a finger to change a gear if that makes sense lol
I have owned an 03 evo for about 8 years and have the evo 10 since december of last year. There are positives and negatives to both and depends on what your using it for.
The evo 8 is a nice car and had an excellent shifter , great visibility and very responsive turning and steering. On a road course I knew the exact placement of the car and it was very easy to drive. On the streets it was a little rough, there was an annoying surge in the car in first gear when in stop and go traffic and the interior is spartan (which personally doesn't bother me but does to some).
The evo 10 is a very comfortable car. Has tons of electronic gadgets and is much more smooth and comfortbale as a daily driver. The first time on a road course I had the traction control off but ayc on. When I was going too hot in a corner I thought I was for sure going to hit the grass but the ayc somehow corrected and put me back on path. That was a really cool feeling. I'm 5' 6" and I dont know if its my height but there are a few blind spots which I never had in the evo 8 and I feel like i sit a bit low. Also the steering feel a bit more sluggish and you can feel the heft when turning. The shifter is also not great. I missed 3rd gear a few times. The shifter just got stuck . I was probably between 1 and 3 or 3 and 5 and got stuck . Another person who drive my car did the same thing although the new shifter cage from TWM may solve that problem.
There is really no right answer here so you have to decide which one you want. Getting some experience in the X would help a great deal. Personally since I drive on the street 95% of the time I prefer the X even with the drawbacks.

I love my X and will never get rid of it. Never owned a VIII/IX but always wanted one and still do. I say keep the VIII and save up your money for a X. Both cars are amazing and have advantages and disadvantages. Just remember there will never be another VIII or IX again and its getting harder and harder to find clean examples. Xs are still in production at least for another year.
I think the VIII/IV looks better, but the X is much more modern feeling. Still raw compared to most of its competitors. All cars keep getting more refined with each generation. If they make an XI, it will be even more civilized. Don't hesitate!
From what I see, viii/ix r easier to work on. The engine bay is a little more spacious.
I just had a TBE installed in my X and the shop that installed it had some trouble taking out the down pipe coz it's so cramped in there. I wouldve done it myself but after seeing them having trouble, I'm glad I paid someone else to do it. But a little patience and some elbow grease always gets the work done. So if u work on ur own car, that's up to u. The only reason I had my TBE installed at a shop was the horror stories of people breaking bolts and have to get it tapped out.
Looks department, I would go with the X...it's kind of reminiscent of the r34 gtr. At least, that's what it is to me. The VIII/XI has that old evo look. So if ur into nostalgia, I'd keep the VIII.
Creature comfort. I believe it's about the same.
Gas mileage, I'm not sure coz I never owned an VIII/IX.
The 4b11t is a strong power plant. 4g63 is awesome since it's what makes an evo an evo. I remember reading back in 07 that the 4g63 was going to be replaced, but after driving the X, it's a no brained. It's matured, like everyone says. It will comply to laws of the land when it's driven normal, but comes out swinging when the throttle is unleashed.
And as it's moniker stand for...it's an evolution. Every iteration is better than the previous....may not be a major difference, but it's a step up, doesnt matter how minute, from what it replaced.
Test drive one, but I hate to say it if u do, u might make an impulse buy. I know mine was...but I don't regret any of it.

Best of luck in your decision, I think you'll be happy either way!
Never owned an 8/9, but had a friend who did. As a DD, I think there is no comparison... the X wins hands down. However, for a number of reasons, I think I'd rather have an 8/9 as a track/rally car (less prep to make it track worthy, lighter, cheaper, more spartan, etc.).
I was like you. When I saw the pics of the new X coming out I went to the dealer to pickup a new '06 IX MR. I just hated the way the new X looked, and they made it heavier, and more *gasp* comfortable. I wanted a drivers car.
Flash forward 5+ years, and I am done with my IX MR. I still love it, but I wanted something more comfortable, with newer gadgets, and without that damn huge wing. I ended up with a new '11 IX MR. I was not sure about the SST, but to be honest I like it. I do miss the clutch pedal, but not when I hit traffic around DC/Baltimore.
Both cars are great, but right now I love my X MR a bit more.
