New Evo shifting

This may be a dumb question but it's been a long time since I have owned a stick. I notice mostly with shifting into third on my 2012 Evo GSR that I get a little grinding. Grinding might not even be the right word because it doesn't always make a noise but I can feel it when I'm putting it in that gear. I'm still taking it easy because it's new so it isn't because I'm on the throttle. I'm shifting at about 4000 rpm or less. Is this just the way it is or am I doing something wrong?

Thank you

I had that a little on my GSR when I had it. It kinda went away around 500 miles then I did some club racing around 2k miles and it came back. Changed all the fluids but never really got any better. I do not know why but my 3rd and 4th gear we always kinda eh. 1st 2nd and 5th were smooth as can be though.

Yea that's kinda of notorious with the X. You can try a Short shifter and bushings or change the Tranny fluid and that usually helps.

Mine is the exact same way, not grinding but slightly notchy. I think its par for the course on this car. It feels as though the fluid is too thin.

Cool, thanks for the quick response. If its more than just mine than I won't worry about it. I plan on getting the shorter shifter and bushings someday so maybe that will make it feel better all around.

thats normal. Change the transmission fluid to MT-85 and get the twm short throw shifter with the cage replacement and bushing replacements. That will take care of it

Get a weighted shift knob you won't believe the difference.

shifts are notchy at first. The big one though is if you are cruising in slow moving traffic and are up shifting around 3k rpm's it helps to goose the throttle a bit more than normal to get rpm's up so you can shift smooth. Otherwise you will get really jerky shifting.

I wouldn't say it will take care of it. Read the reviews of that cage. Every one has said that they feel zero difference after installing it. Waste of money IMO. Best you can do is get a short shifter with under hood bushings, some different fluid and it will improve, but probably still not go away completely.

I've read differently. Everyone that i've talked to that has bought the sts, cage replacement, all bushing replacement, weighted shift knob and changed the fluid to mt-85, all say that notchiness is gone and most of the grinding in 3rd. But unless you get your transmission rebuilt with better syncro, there will be a light grinding. To tell you the truth i've never expeirenced the grinding.

Thats whats waiting for me at home (along with a **** load of other parts including all the bushings)

I should clarify. Most of the reviews of the cage I've read are from those that had already done all the other mods. So once adding the cage, little to no difference was seen. If you go from straight stock to what you've mentioned, then I would agree a noticeable difference will be seen.

the viscosity needed is different than previous gen evos. . if your going to change it, use 1qt of mt90, 2qt mtl (redline cocktail).
