Notchy gear switching? What RPM you shift?

As some may have read, I just bought my 2012 EVO the other day. It was new when purchased and now has about 100 miles.

I have noticed it is a little notchy going into 2nd and 3rd gear. If I switch at 3k rpm's or so it is more noticeable. If I wait until about 4k rpm, it is less notchy overall.

Is this normal? Will it smooth out as I break it in? Are they just generally notchy when switching gears?

When doing everyday driving and not intending to accelerate quickly, at what rpm do ya'll normally switch gears at? What rpm's do yall cruise at also? For example I was cruising at 35mph. I could be in 3rd gear at over 3krpm's or I can be in 4th gear under 3krpm's. Which one do you cruise at?

I shift like 3K-4K when I DD. The notchiness is normal for the Evo X's.

I have the 2012 and I asked the same question. It appears to be normal. Sometimes it seems to be smoother when I shift at higher RPM, but like Sev, I usually shift about 3-4 while normal driving. You can also research the redline cocktail for the transmission. I may try that. Maybe make it a little smoother from what I have read.

The notchiness is normal. After you break it in a little, it will shift alot better. A short shifter doesnt hurt either.

Thanks for all the responses and suggestions. I see the notchiness is normal for the car. It doesnt grind or anything. Just not a smooth as I expected. I had a manual eclipse 4G. It was very smooth. I guess I expected the EVO to be the same. Doesnt bother me eitherway. I will also research some of ya'lls suggestions.

I have this set up with the AMS oil transmission fluid. I still have slight notchiness but nothing like what it's used to be. To be honest IMHO if I could go back and do it all over again, I would have made this my first mod. LOVE LOVE LOVE the way this set up feels.

I believe you're referring to AMSOIL and not "AMS oil". AMS doesn't make any tranny oil.

Just don't want the OP to go scouring AMS's website for hours trying to find their oil

He wouldn't have had a problem looking since they do sell AMSoil

Good point. Fact remains though that they're 2 different companies
