Trading in WTF!
Private sell it and get a couple grand more than that. That's what I am doing. Both Nissan dealerships and chevvy (was interested in a brand new zo6 for a little bit) offered me 30k. Yea its a good price and all but I have put 25k in it... I want to get at least a Y-pipe + catback + tune for the GTR. Both the dealers for nissan here are ridiculous, they want 6-8k above MSRP for '13 and wont budge on locating anything but a new gtr... Nagtroc ftw win though
The other thing some people don't realize is that dealers don't care about mods. In fact, from a dealer's perspective it makes them harder to sell because people buying from a dealership want stock cars. We get a lot of people who want way more money for their car because they've put 10 grand in to it, and expect like 6 or 7 of it back, when the reality is we don't even want it.
I was bummed I lost $3K by trading my '08 Scion XB instead of privately selling it. (And I drove it for 3.5 years). ...a $20K loss within a year? I'd kill myself surely.
26K is closer to the mark. A dealership here was selling a 2010 GSR with 4K miles on it earlier this year, for around $29,500 after negotiations. They'll want to make at least $3K or $4K on it. For that reason, they would need to pay no more than $26K for the car.
You could probably get $27K for it the most, if the dealer aims to sell it for $31K or so. Everything give or take.

You don't lose $20k b/c 8 months have passed, you lose b/c of a model and/or year change, 10k miles on the odometer, condition of the car including modifications, car color, smoker, options, the brand where you traded, etc.
How did you manage to pay $43k for an 09 Z? If you had a trade you don't know what you paid for the car, only numbers on paper. There are always back stories to these great rip offs and great deals alike.

The price for the car was 34k with SSS... the rest was about 2.8k in tax/title/fees, and upside down that kept piling up from me upgrading cars year in year out... from the Lancer ES, to a Ralliart, to then the Evo... wish I would've just waited

Not only am I upside down up the a**, but some dude on a SVT Lightning goes and hits my fender and it's now a report of a crash on Carfax... sigh

maybe the OP was in the same situation... unless he bought the Z with all the accessories!

Man, you live you learn. Don't do that again, pretty much, that's all I can say.
The fact of the matter is, there is no THING that can make a man happy (this goes to the OP too). You will always settle into the same level of happiness. (Somebody in this forum reminded me of that.)
I can speak out of experience because I screwed up my credit 6 years ago because of stupid mistakes. I didn't think it'd matter much at the time, but it did. It's been a pain in the *** dealing with that in the last couple of years. Thankfully, by now it's all sorted out and things have been fixed. I'm doing well now and I'm VERY careful not to make the same mistakes again.
Sounds like the OP realized a new Evo would not make him happy and now the bills weigh more than the car.
You could either suck it up and pay for it until it's done - or get out of the loan if you can while taking a loss. But, the important thing is... Don't get into another expensive car. At least not for a while, and not until you realize a car is not going to make you happy.
You need to shop around for your trade in, you won't make more than selling private, but if you ask me people buying on the forums and autotrader are cheap... No offense to anyone.
Holy crap man, that's just scary to read. Sorry to hear.

But to the OP, I know how it feels but I think it also depends on the dealership... when we wanted to sell my wife's '11 Eclipse, my local Mitsu dealership would only give me $16,000... I almost laughed at them (we paid about 26k for a GS Sport loaded) and these are ppl I've know for a while and I've bought about 4 or 5 cars from them and sent about 10 customers who've walked out with a car... so I went to a Hyundai dealership a few blocks down and they offered me $19,500... Took it right away and leased a new Elantra for like $220 m/o
Try shopping around different brands, some dealerships might give you more
)
25k for a trade in is fair lol they need to make money that same car used sells at south coast for around low 30k. I paid a year ago 28k for an 08 with gsr SSS on work wheels and tein coilovers with 19k miles so that had to of given that guy 23-24.
They have a blue GSR at south coast right now that they can't sell bc of the color and they lowered the price to 31,998 and it has 700 miles that's not a typo either lol.

I'm going to buy a Kia soul and keep it for the long haul. I had one of the older style scion xb and it was an awesome kick around car. I have my car on Craigslist for $30k but if I can get a dealer to give me $28k I'll just trade it in and roll $5500 negative. Between the lower payment, cheaper insurance, better mpg and 87 octane I'll easily recoup the $5500 over the next 3-5 years. Now just finding a dealer that will give me what I want. Meanwhile if any one on here is interested?
