Seeking input - New 2012 EVO X MR mods
Seeking input - New 2012 EVO X MR mods
I bought a new 2012 EVO X MR about three weeks ago and for the past 3 months I have been investigating into what my first mods should be for my EVO with the goal of a street machine that is reliable and has a healthy AWHP target around 350-400 (but pucker factors is more important than a dyno queen). I don’t race but I do like winding roads (e.g. Tail of the Dragon) and I am not a show car person; just the average car enthusiast looking to enjoy what the EVO has to offer.
I contacted Chad Block since CBRD is one of the closest and reputable shops near me (I am in Virginia). This is what I asked him to quote me plus whatever he thinks needs to be added/modified/deleted for what I am looking for:
Updated Build Plan: 4/19/2012 (Planned to be at CBRD middle of May and finished by end of May 2012)
. CBRD bbx lite upgraded actuator add porting
. CBRD fmic
. CBRD IC pipes (hot side / upper)
. CBRD tubular manifold
. AMS widemouth downpipe
. ID 1000 injectors (with pnp)
. Pierburg 3 port
. Synapse Compact Diverter Valve
. Invidia Q300 Catback exhaust system
. Test pipes
. CBRD 3" Aluminum evo X intake with velocity bellmouth and filter
. Perrin turbo inlet pipe
. Three gauges; boost, wideband, and tranny oil temp; using the CP-E 3
Pod cluster and AEM digital gauges
. DW65C 265lph compact pump
. Agency Power 3pc Silicone Red Radiator Hose Kit
. Bilstein withSwift Spec R Springs
. steel braided brake lines
. VOLK Racing C345 - 18x9.5 +22 mm offset with Yokohama's ADVAN Neova AD08 265/35ZR18
. If needed fender modifications for wheels
The above build list came about after my extensive research of the EVO community. I still need expert advice from CBRD and AMS before pulling the trigger and would like to hear your thoughts from the EVO community.
I have also Andrew Chavez to provide me a similar quote for work even though AMS is in Chicago. I am willing to take my car as far as Chicago to get it done right, but rather have a closer reliable shop that I can partner with for my current and future needs.
Anyone have any advice on what I am looking to get out of my EVO, what parts to go with, things to be aware of that I may have missed reading thousands of post on this forum and Evoxforums, Socalevo, etc. ?
And yes, I would like to stick with single vendor where possible hence why I want to go with CBRD BBX Lite and not FPGreen/FPRed which is extremely popular (for good reason). If I do business with AMS, I want to use as much AMS parts as I can.
Please be mindful I am new to the Mitsubishi / EVO community and come from a Nissan community; Godzilla is a bit out of range at the moment and the EVO seemed to me to be the next best thing (rightfully or foolishly).

-Radiator is not needed
-If you get a tubular manifold be sure to get an aftermarket heat shield
-If your MR has a plastic valve cover (2012 probably does) you need to upgrade it or your manifold WILL melt it
-If you are pushing the MR to 350+hp you will need to upgrade the clutch packs
-If you are tracking the car you will need to get an upgraded tranny cooler
-I'm not 100% sure but I don't think you need such large injectors
- The listed mods will probably get you to your preferred horsepower level, but unless you do the supporting tranny mods your not going to have very good reliability.

Stick with cbrd and you'll be a happy camper period.
You don't need the rad, but everything else looks good. If your putting the shallow pan on..may as well just go all out with the cooler setup as well right?
I got an mr running fp red all boltons ect..VD says 450/380. No clutch packs and no slip just needs proper tuning.

See what Chad says, but personally I really don't think you need to do anything with the tranny. First of all, it's the tq to watch, not the hp. Second, plenty of MRs are at that power level you are targeting with no upgrades. Third, talk to mr guys about mr mods... No offense but gsr guys will not be familiar with the sst or be biased against it generally...
we have been talking-
agreed at the power level we discussed standard clutch packs are fine--- we have done quite a few of them from 380-420whp with stock clutch packs (sst programming help from bryan aka razorlab to make them right)
Also- the radiator is not a neccessity----- but our client had asked for it added- we did not originally have it in our proposal-
and third- we have quite a few cars running plastic valve covers with the factory heatshield/manifold gasket and no problems since they came out---- cars that get road raced also- some manifolds are closer to the valve cover than others- ours has not been a problem-

we will have a revised proposal to you shortly!!
Thanks for considering us!!

I based what I know of the MR by reading off of this site, not because I am biased against it in any way.
As for the valve cover I remember reading a thread on here about Manifolds with the cover and said it was a Definite NO without a heat shield or metal cover, Per a very reputable source.

Chad did my MR setup similar, but with a TIAL .82 housing 30RB . I like having the radiator. I drive the **** like I stole it on stock clutch packs, and after some spirited driving I like being able to drive like a regular person, or even stop, and not worry about heat issues. Also, no problems with the stock valve cover. I have a CBRD downpipe though, and an AMS pipe in the back.
